Tips to remove smoke smell from car interior please:

My parents have just bought a car at an auction for a very good price, but to get it at that price they had to make a quick decision and didn't get to look the car over. I think it's only about 18 months old but it absolutely stinks inside of cigarette smoke. Can anybody recommend any tried and tested techniques or products that can permanently remove the smell. The less fuss the better.

Thanks all.

One thing I have tried to get rid of fish smell from the house is vinegar without a top on. I picked it up off the web and had a spare supply of the stuff worked very well.

The prob with smoke smell is it gets into soft furnishings. If you use a perfumed spray you just mask it.
I am afraid they will have to use a good quality soft furnishing/ upholstry shampoo clean the seats, floor, inside the roof, parcel shelf if applicable and the doors, If safe to do so leave the windows open for a couple of hours and carefully light a few scented candles set on baking trays.

The above works. I had to use it as My kid brother 'borrowed' my car and he is also a leper I mean smoker he used it for a week end and the smell was disgusting. He said he had the window open but couldn't see my point of this being usless as the smell of smoke doesnt go out the window with the smoke.

He brought a anti smoke plug in for me but that just made me and the kids wretch.

in car ioniser off ebay should do the trick or a wooden egg cup / off cut of wood soaked in white vinigar should do the trick but expect the car to smell of vinigar for a bit ...

Spraying everything with Febreze worked for me! Seats, carpets and the roof.

Give it a good going over and leave the doors and windows open as the upholstery gets a bit damp. Then a quick squirt every time you get in for the next few journeys.

Clean all the windows inside with window cleaner (you will be appalled at the amount of yellowy black stuff that comes off and that really does smell) and wipe over all surfaces with a furniture polish - I used baby wipes, actually, that my sister had left behind!

It worked on a real stinker that I got!

If you have one, a steam cleaner should do the trick!

i used ASDA's copy of Fabreze - I sprayed it everywhere and left it on the drive with all the doors open. Did it every day for about 2wks and the smell did go. I despise the smell of smoke, but ASDA logic really worked.

Thanks guys, these all sound fairly positive and I'll definitely be passing them on to the old guys.

    Cheers

I use a Vax on our cars, works a treat. Febreze or the cheaper £1 shop versions should work but with all textiles try on a small area first. In house odour neutraliser left in car for a few days will also help. No good buying car ones as they aren't strong enough for pongy cars.

Also get them to check the roof lining, thats where most of it sticks and goes yellow, well worth getting it cleaned as the longer it is left the more chance of permenant staining.
One day I might be more organised...........

Eucalyptus oil, dabbed all over the car seats. It will smell like a vicks cough inhaler for a week but it might sort out the smell permanently.

This can also be used to remove fresh oil and tar stains from car seats.
