I believe in the right to strike. I am utterly against this strike.

I don't think existing TU legislation is relevant to today's economy - particularly in a private sector industry. As others have said - if you are not happy with your T&Cs regarding compensation and benefits, then look elsewhere. Unions should protect the health and safety of workers, and those who do not have alternative employers.*

We are in the middle of a terrible economic time. With companies going under, so many people being made redundant, no payrises and even paycuts, this action by BA cabin crew seems unjustifiable. The money argument seems ridiculous when you consider market equivalents. This is a recession - for companies to survive they have to adapt.

If anyone has heard a plausible argument for this (disgustingly timed) strike, I would be interested to hear it.

And speaking of which I am pretty lucky. I booked my BA flights home to visit my family for Christmas a while ago, but I am fortunate enough to be able to make alterative arrangements (at more than trible the original cost). If I hadn't had a spare £170 (as I'm sure many don't), I would be anxiously awaiting news from BA waiting to hear whether I'd be spending my Christmas alone.

As someone earlier pointed out, BA cabin crew accept with the position that they may have to spend some of their days off away from family. When I took this job hundred of miles from home I did so on faith that the flights I booked in summer would take me home to see mine.

How many Christmases ruined by this action? BA Cabin Crew - reconsider, this is wrong.

    * Incidentally, those people working in public sectors (i.e. nursing and teaching) are doing more difficult jobs, for less money, which require more qualifications. And can you imagine the entire nursing community deciding to refuse care at Christmas to argue the point of a contract? Even if they didn't like their boss.

  • they are scum. the union is a dinosaur

"whats that you say? a 700m loss? Ok our members still want a pay rise and we don't care how or where the money comes from. afterall, our members are only paid 100% more than their rivals so they are certainly due an increase"

I saw some smug looking blonde in the paper today with a "united we stand" t-shirt. i hope she loses her job. hateful phucking kunts the lot of em.

Judging by your failure to reply to my last post, I think I may have stumbled across the reason for your all your anger and hatred whitehorse..........

You are a repressed homosexual and your outrageous, extremist views are a manifestation of that repression.

    Psychologists call it "displacement".............

BA only has a future long term if business class traffic increases - they can't compete on short haul or economy. Economy just fills the plane and short haul services Heathrow as a hub.

Business traffic (primarily Atlantic) has never fully recovered post 9/11. With the global economic squeeze, and new communications technology there is less business class traffic now. BA needs a new business model.

Hmm, redit crunch has done away with a LOT of travel in our experience. Interestingly though, it seems its often cheaper to travel (which seems expensive to me) than satalite links....

I think a lot more is done by phone now.
  • Ive just read the first post it makes me laugh if the employees of British airways think they are being treated unfairly then it is their choice if they want to go on strike, the union is its employees.

Im in a union and if i think i was being fairly paid but the union wanted more and asked me to vote for strike action i would simply say no im happy with what i am getting.

If a lot of thick people cant make their own minds up to whats a fair wage and decide to go out on strike just because the union tells them thats what to do then they are too stupid for their own good.

I watched panorama last night about how unrealistic royal mail treat their employees and i read post's on here about people saying they should sack all the royal mail workers and give their jobs to people who want a job.

Everyone knows if they are being treated badly at work if they want to be a door mat and get walked all over, just to keep and job then fair play to them, but to say as soon has any companies employees decide to go on strike to sack them is a right load of bo11ocks.
