If you have that little money then what the hell are you doing keeping a kitten knowing that at some point they will need veterinary treatment?

You could have asked for a collar, i don't see why it should be up to your vets to mention this to you. You probably would have complained about being charged £x for it anyway.
Why couldn't you have gone with your husband to prevent further damage? Stick the kid in the car and off you go. You knew she was pulling at her stitches and would continue to do it yet did nothing to try and stop her.
You are just being greedy in asking for extra, just accept what they have offered and move on.
Do you really think that every animal is going to cost the same in veterinary bills? How stupid can you be! I had one dog for 12 years and he cost me a total of £400, i've had my current one for 8 months and we've already paid out over a grand for him.
Don't bother getting another pet because you probably won't be able to take care of it.

    1. I have 3 children, 1 of which is a 2 month old baby and my 7 year old who was extremely distressed at seeing the cat after she had pulled her stitches out.Do you really think it would have been a good idea for all 5 of us to take the cat at 11pm at night?????
    2. The point I was making was that the cesarean by nature is a more difficult op than the one my kitten needed and as I said this is not somethink anyonE INCLUDING THE VETS could have seen coming.
    3. Over the course of my life I have had 10 cats and NONE of them have done this and none of them have had a collar after spaying.

No really, if the OP can't afford those vets bills she can't afford a cat or a dog. One of my cats had cystitis and the treatment cost more than double that. His sister died young in tragic circumstances and that treatment cost nearly a grand. It is not right to have a young animal put down for that reason.

If you can't afford it or can't afford or get organised to get insurance or get yourself sorted with the pdsa then you can't look after a pet. Anything else is supremely selfish.

Funny you should say this as the EV are at the PDSA vets.

The OP gave a cat a home.
The OP done the responsible thing by having the cat neutered.

Never mind that though as something out of OP control happened - so let's all hang the OP.

What is wrong with you people?

Yes i do think it would have been a good idea actually. You let her get worse by not going with your husband, or at least getting someone else to go with him. Why didn't you try wrapping her up in a blanket making it harder for her to reach the stitches? Some cling film around her would have helped too.
Which is why you need to save for emergencies.
None of my dogs have been allergic to any food but this one is. You can't go around saying that just because the rest of them have been fine this one will be exactly the same.

I feel the offer is fair, However I do feel your post is at best inaccurate and at worse a fairytale.

TBH i have had 8 cats in my lifetime 6 of then from kittens and 2 adopted adult cats plus 2 dogs. After each anomal has been spayed/neutered we have always been given collars, yes its a bit annoying taking them on and off to let the animal drink/eat and one of my cars would only go pee pee in a covered tray so the collar had to come off for that too. inconvenient but essential IMO.

Every vet i have came accross will do anything they possibly can to save an animal especially a young one. From your OP it sounds like the operation required was a simple one as the cost is not terribly high. I had to treat one cat for bladder crystals and that was alot more. Once again even needing to use an emergency vet they offered a payment plan pretty much on the spot with the it will cost XX amout but you can pay that up or we will invoice you later. In my experience a vet will have the animals interests first and formost and then will sort out the monetary side later on.

As other posters have said no insurance is irresponsible. TBH the more i read this thread the more i'm convinced it is a wind up

I am getting fed up of this. I came on here for opinions but there is no need tio make out I am a bad person. In answer to many of the comments. (not that I should be justifying some of the answers with a response), I always have a contingency fund in my account of over £500 but a week before this happened my car broke down and I had to replace it with all the money I had and I had to borrow extra. I am such an uncaring cat owner that the money I sent with my husband to pay the vets was our food money for the week.
Also, the cat didn't cost me anything. I took her on as I didn't want her to be like her mother, being allowed to get pregnant again and again just so that her owners would have kittens to sell. Escpecially as after what happened to my other cat I knew if she needed treatment her owner would not even attempt to get it done and she would be left. If this makes my a bad person, so be it. Misguided as I may have been, I have only ever tried to do my best for my family.
Circumstances beyond my control meant I did not have the money but then I should never have been asked for it in the first place. They should not have tried to charge me. And that in the end is my point.

  • i've only scanned the comments, and im fairly sure that, you asked for opinions and got what you asked for.

im sorry if people dont agree with you, as i dont. but please dont ask other people for their time and opinion if you dont want an answer you may not agree with.

The OP asked people on opinions about the issue - not about herself as a person.

If someone can not separate the two,
maybe he/she should not be venting their life frustrations on a stranger on a public forum?
