This is the problem with public forums -some people are not able to address the issue, they address the OP....

Just a small coment from me on this one - never heard of a pet being neutered and not given a collar (lampshade) to wear after that, exactly to prevent to stop the animals taking the stiches out and the owner instructed how to put it back on if the pat took it off.

We were offered the chance to buy a couple collars when I got my two neutered last December and I was so glad I got them! I have a boy and a girl, both wouldn't leave themselves alone although I was so impressed at the neat incision they left on Tiger, she only had one stitch! She did however still manage to pull that out, took her back the next day and they put a quick staple in.

I do think that collars should be standard though, they're always useful!

My vets don't give you a collar when you get your male cat done, there is no stitches with that op, just little puncture holes in the doodahs.

I didn't mean no cash in hand, I meant not £1 to her name, and wouldn't be able to afford reasonable installments, and hence not able to even pay eventually (and hence unable to legally agree to pay later). Again assuming the operation would succeed, if the E.V. had not made the mistake then the cat would not have died.

If you have that little money then what the hell are you doing keeping a kitten knowing that at some point they will need veterinary treatment?

You could have asked for a collar, i don't see why it should be up to your vets to mention this to you. You probably would have complained about being charged £x for it anyway.
Why couldn't you have gone with your husband to prevent further damage? Stick the kid in the car and off you go. You knew she was pulling at her stitches and would continue to do it yet did nothing to try and stop her.
You are just being greedy in asking for extra, just accept what they have offered and move on.
Do you really think that every animal is going to cost the same in veterinary bills? How stupid can you be! I had one dog for 12 years and he cost me a total of £400, i've had my current one for 8 months and we've already paid out over a grand for him.
Don't bother getting another pet because you probably won't be able to take care of it.

I agree that the OP is NOT at fault (although maybe could have worded first post differently) and does NOT deserve to be have the insults thrown at her (animal cruelty? - I don't think so). However, I also don't think there is a claim against the vet (even with the collar issue, as I said before, my old vets did not issue them per se for cats). The issue of court is what the original post was about and I dont think there is a claim which court would address particularly when the vets has tried to make amends (IMO no amount of money will make up for the loss of the poor cat, I think the vet offered an amount which they considered acceptable but also knowing it cannot replace the cat) .

Charlies bleed more than expected when they done the op, the vet told me. He must have had a very big pair;)

Haha well Archie had a fair size and that was at 5months! He still has little ones leftover though, just to prove he's manly and all.....:D

Sorry if it has already been stated BUT if you have a kitten or any animal you should have a contingency fund for any animal emergencies! If you could not afford this then the animal should be insured.

Most vets have payment plans for things like this - after all they are there to HELP animals!

Whats going to happen when you have a puppy? Its walking down the street and cuts its paw/runs out in front of a car and breaks a leg but you can't afford the treatment. Yet another animal put to death?

Do not get an animal unless you can afford to care for it.

I would like some opinions please on whether or not I should take the vets I use to court and if I am being reasonable asking for the amount I am.

We had a kitten and as soon as she turned 6 months I took her to have her vaccinations and be spayed. The operation went fine and we took her home. A few days later (on a weekend) she pulled out her stitches and started pulling her intestines out. I phoned the emergency vets who said I would have to pay £60 as well as the cost of anyn treatment. I said ok and sent my husband through. By the time he got there she was a right mess and they said it would cost £370 to have the operation to fix her (at this point you are probably thinking I should have expected this but my last cat had a cesarean and that only cost £190). We couldn't afford this and they said the only other option would be to have her put down and this would cost £136 which we paid.
The next day I went to my vets only to be told that the emergency vet should not have attempted to charge us anything as THEY cover the costs which means my cat died for nothing. They have since sent us a letter confirming that this is their error and the cat shiould never have died. they have offered £236 which is £136 for what we paid and £100 FOR A NEW CAT. We are all traumatised by this escpeciall;y my daughter who saw the cat do this to herself and from the calls made on that night has figured out what has happened. I have said I feel we are entitled to £500 compensation and have refused their offer and I just wanted to know what others think. Am i being greedy? Do you think I would win if I took it to court. I just don't know but as I have pointed out in my letter to them I will now never own a cat again but if I wanted to get a dog it would cost much more than they are offering.

Any opinions would be grately appreciated
    Thanks
    Eveie

so you are thinking about the money even though you say your daughter is traumatised, if she is be a good parent and look after her before you start looking for more money
If you dont like me remember its mind over matter, I dont mind and you dont matter ;)

    .

If the OP couldn't afford to pay the vet in reasonable instalments she should never have got the kitten in the first place and certianly shouldn't be contemplating getting a dog
