Thank you LameWolf. I've also just started a live in relationship with my fiance-who also smokes, and who also wants to stop, going to need the mutual support I think.

I stopped when I was pregnant because the smell of it made me SO sick, but I don't intend getting pregnant again!! lol. I think I would prefer to go the cold turkey route-even if it's just to prove it to myself that I can actually do it. Excel spreadsheet? Excellent idea! Never thought of that. Thank you :-)

Be cautious with stopping with your fiance. It is way too easy for you to talk each other out of the reasons for stopping "Just one won't hurt....I'lll cut back".

I stopped cold turkey nigh on two years ago. I used to smoke 20 a day from age 15 right up to age 38 - and I LOVED to smoke. My husband is still a smoker and yet still I managed to stop despite the fact he still smokes around me.

The hardest thing for me was my mind. It plays tricks on you, although you are totally and utterly determined when you start after a while, you start talking yourself out of giving up. So, write all your reasons down and when that little voice pipes up, read your reasons again.

Regarding the twenty years still want a cigarette thing - yes, I do but in a nostalgic sort of way (bizarrely!) not in a desperate, craving sort of way. The feeling passes really, really quickly and you find yourself feeling sorry for the smokers who are so desperate for a hit that they stand out in pouring rain, freezing cold etc to get that hit.

Finally, you may find yourself desperately envying smokers - don't even go there - they are really envious of you and even the ones that say that happy to be smokers and enjoy their habit are lying - to themselves and to you.

Smokers STINK. You will notice that quite strongly - I do.

Welcome to a happy, healthy and wealthy future. I won't wish you luck because you don't need luck. Enjoy being smoke free - I do.

I had my mother, father and a close relative all die of cancer and all smokers.

The best motivator for you would be to maybe become a volunteer/hospital visitor for a while so that you could see the misery of slowly suffocating with a smoking induced disease such as lung cancer. Its a slow ,debilitating and painful death full of woe, tears and regret.

I am grateful though to smokers for they kindly sacrifice their lives and pay the tax which i might otherwise have to pay.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Spot on there... when I found out the hubby had started again, I was really peeved, but I thought "No", I'm doing this because I want to, not because we want to.

I don't envy smokers at all either, at the airport after even a short flight to Germany earlier this year, it was quite funny to watch my sister in law and mother literally running out to get their fix, whilst we leisurely sat and had a latte whilst waiting for the bags. I used to be like that.... I used to be a desperado too.... I don't envy them, I pity them. I will never smoke again!

And I can smell smokers a mile off. It doesn't matter if you had a fag ten mins ago or two hours ago, you still reek of it!! I can walk around the supermarket and notice staff smelling of fags, as well as shoppers, but you won't appreciate just how much you smell until you have been stopped for at least a few months.

Thank you-I'm a strong minded person, but this seems to be my stumbling block. Suppose I should think of it as 'them' against 'me' and I HATE losing, but this is probably one of the toughest things i'll do, and I don't mean to trivialise anybodys problems there, so forgive me if I offended anyone.

Try Allen Carr's book. Seriously, at least give it a go before you resort to medication. Its got loads of people off fags. Even comes with a money back guarantee I think!

But can anyone advise me that when they put their cig money aside-did they dip into it because it was there?
No, I didn't. I kept a track of it, as I said, so I knew how much of my money was saved ciggie money, and when I was sure I was in the clear, I used the saved balance to purchase a lovely pewter and crystal dragon. (I collect dragons:D)

If you can think of yours as your "visit-the-boys fund" you'll be able to leave it alone.

I was very lucky in that a) I smoked because of stress, and I got myself out of the stressful situation and b) Mr LW has never smoked.

I now don't even give cigs a thought, other than to think "what a pong" if I'm near someone who's been smoking.:o

Thanks LW- I don't know if it's going to be harder or easier if Mr SB stops with me. I know I'm going to be SO crabbit-it'll be WWIII if we both end up like that. I guess I never thought of it like my 'visit the boys' fund, all I could think about was not having my adult dummy as such.

I've been onto the Doctors today for an appointment with the stop smoking clinic thingie, and, even though I work-I manage to smoke at least 10 during the day (smoke quick and plenty breaks)..but today at work- only 4!! :T People are asking if I'm ill!

  • How about something like this? If you can pay in without the card, you could give it to someone to look after thereby removing temptation.
