Bit confused about best way to go.

Good luck, sounds like it's not never smoking that's giving you the heebies but the thought of not smoking. Loads of smoking cessation help and aids out there, Champix appears to have the best success rate.
That's it exactly. I remember speaking to someone who had stopped for twenty years and she STILL fancied a cigarette  That's plain frightening! The worry beads suggestion from earlier sounds good. Never heard of Champix, so I'm going to google it right away.Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x

Go to a chemist and sign up to the Stopping Smoking programme, it costs £4 for a months supply, and you can change over from patches/inhalers/gum etc.
Im currently trying to quit, unsuccessfully so far, but have switched to rollups and am smoking A LOT LESS, and weaning myself off slowly.0 -
An addiction is hard to overcome and I do think that if a person is over a certain age (65 or so) then telling them to stop doing something they have done for over 50 years is poinltess! I think you are still young enough to reap health and monetary benefits though. You could try making a poster of pictures to remind you why it's time to give up? A plane ticket , your sons etc
Worjk out how many packs equal a plane ticket!
Thanks Atomised-I have their gorgeous army pictures on the wall and I keep looking at them thinking 'right you two-think your mother won't come and bother you-just watch me!' They think I'll never do it but you're right..probably a months cigarette money would get me there and back, with enough for a hotel for a night or so..But can anyone advise me that when they put their cig money aside-did they dip into it because it was there?Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Well done, SB, and good luck.
For what it's worth my suggestions are:
Get a glass jar, ideally with a counter function so as you put the cash you would've spent on cigarettes into the jar you can see how much it mounts up. Lots of different ones on the market now (internet £6/Avon £10) Really spurs you on when you see how much it accumulates.
Secondly, I once read that any (nicotine) craving only lasts for 10 minutes so..... think short term. You CAN go 10 mins without one. OK it may come back shortly afterwards but again you only have to refocus for 10 mins. (If it helps, try and think back how long labour lasted for.... 10 mins is a walk in the park!) As you say, your boys are are facing much worse......
If all else fails, just remember that you're supposedly a member of the weaker sex (yeah, right! :rotfl:) GO GIRL, GO!!!!Make the most of everything in life (especially Avon)

If you have an exemption card it will be free, but £4 for a month supply of whatever option you choose, I think there is nasal spray and lozenges too, isn't bad
Good luck!0 -

That's where I am angelic! And flippin' 'eck it's Baltic. I'm up early today..the start of it all-I hope, but if not I'm leaving my first cigarette a bit later ie not putting a cig in my mouth before my eyes open. I'm typing instead. I'll be looking up on all the suggestions today, and hope that by Saturday night i'll be able to say i've had ONE smoke free day...:A

How about getting a Terramundi pot- put all your cigarette money in it, but you can't get the money out unless you smash the pot."Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye."...Miss piggy0

I stopped using Champix.... I still found that self control was needed. I just talked myself through the first few days. After 6 weeks of taking the tablets I decided the following day would be my last one.
Got up in the morning, I was determined. Mid-morning, fancied one, talked myself around "You come a few hours now, you can wait another 30 mins" sort of thing.... lunchtime, same again, and basically did that for about three days. After then it seems to get much easier. Once I had stopped for three weeks I took myself off the Champix as I was beginning to get heartburn and upset stomach.
That was back in March this year. Can't say that I have "craved" a fag since, but I do find myself thinking about it occassionally. I would say you go through stages, at first you still love the smell... but that starts to change.... the smell of a fag now makes me feel physically sick. I presume that means that my body is no longer attracted to them and I no longer have the need or the addiction that goes with it, although in all honesty, I still enjoyed the smell until I had stopped for about 6 months.
Unfortunately, the hubby, presuming Champix was a wonder drug, had a fag after about three weeks after he stopped and so never quite managed to give them up, so I get to put up with the smell of stale smoke, although he has cut down lots, but I think that has more to do with the time of year and the fact that he has to go outside to have one!!
Just for your information, everyone I know who has tried Champix to stop smoking has been sucessful. Side effects have varied, I suffered with only one morning of an uneasy stomach, whereas neighbours were flat on their backs with every symptom out there. I suffered heartburn towards the end, and the hubby also suffered heartburn and indigestion.
For the record, I had smoked for 25 years and this was my first real attempt at quitting and I smoked around 40 a day, so its definitely doable for anyone!!Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs
