I use a damp flannel or piece of muslin, but apply some lip balm first so it's not as harsh. Children's toothbrushes are much softer and gentle on your lips if you want to use a brush.

I can thoroughly recommend the Body Shop's hemp lip protector or Carmex.

  • hi,
Most high street lipbalm/salve contains petroleum which will dry out your lips you could do this (is what i do) you can buy these items cheaply from ebay and it goes a long way.

4 tsp of butters (shea, mango, coconute etc) you can mix if you wish
    1 tsp beeswax
2 tsp oil (almond, coconute, olive etc) again you can mix
10-15 drops of flavouring (make sure it's not water based)
jars/pots or tubes (old baby food jars are good or old lipbalm tins)

Like melting chocolate place a pan of water with the bowl on top.
add your beeswax, til melted (do not boil)
    add oils,
Take off heat then add the butters and stir till melted. (this is so the butter doesn't go grainy) (dip a metal spoon in and place in freezer for 5 seconds to feel texture)
    add flavour
    and pour into tubs
Let sit at room temperature till hard.

Because it's made with natural ingredients and has a higher quantity of butters it's more nourishing and moisturing that shop bought lip balms,

You can also add 1 spoon of brown sugar to the above mix after flavour has been added to make a lip exfoliator, simply rub on lips and wipe off

So....I'm the only person who hates carmex? It makes my lips sting a lot and doesn't work as quickly for me as pure vit e....and I hate the smell of it. Still, its good it works for most people!

No Lostinrates, I hate carmex too! It stinks and it stings! I like the blistex range (although I don't like the really irritating advert, well I think it's that one anyway with the lips?) lol

The trick isn't to brush your lips as if you're brushing your teeth, it's just to remove the top layer of dead skin so quite firm but light enough for it not to hurt, I do mine by scrubbing vertically then horizontally. If your lips are severly chapped (eg when you smile they crack and bleed) you may need to moisturise by applying a medicated lip balm for a week or so before trying to exfolite in any manner.

Ah! Thats where I'm going wrong! Had been using the toothbrush in circular movements AKA: exfoliating my face. But my lips are always really fragile- they seem ok, then I go and grin innanely or shout or something and....rip rip rip- my lips get torn! I think its probably more to do with my diet (lack of fatty acids /oils) thats to blame rather then the increasing volume of natural lip balms I seem to own (yet strangly never actually use....) Should remember to take Omega 3 oils but have a brain like a sieve!

Another vote for Weeyins method-I have used it for years. It sounds harsh but if you use your own judgement when massaging the sugar/oil mix in there shouldnt be too many health and safety issues. I remove with a flannel rinsed in really hot water.

I find Nivea SOS lip balm is the best. It's in Bodycare just now attached to a body moisturiser - only £3.99 for both (it's usually about £3 on its own).

I agree about the Carmex, sometimes makes my lips peel more!

Hi there, I have suffered from dry, painful, chapped lips for a number of years and tried pretty much all the methods that all these posts have suggested only for the dry lips to come back (including drinking loads of water). Regardless of the time of year, summer/winter the same all of the time. The best exfoliator I have used is the one by Benefit Dr. Feelgood Lipscription, Lip treatments. It has a exfoliator and balm in two seperate tubes which helped a lot but never really cured the problem. I had no choice but to steer clear of lipsticks and glosses as they only made my lips even more serverely chapped.

For me a trip to the doc's seem to be the answer, only last week I went to the docs and he prescribed me a cream and after a couple of days my lips were back to normal (after god knows how many years!!).

My advise is try the Benefit range and if all else fails, go to the docs!!

    Gops x
