Anyone Own a Weimaraner?

Our next door neighbours had a weimaraner when they first moved next door. It was very mardy and would howl the place down the minute they left the house, which could be for hours and into the early hours. When this died they had another one and this was the same, however a little better because there was no howling in the night if the couple stayed out late.

When this one died (they've lived next door for at least 22 years!) they replaced it with a similar looking dog but not a weimaraner. It was lovely because we didn't hear a peep. However, this dog had an accident and died and my poor neighbours were devastated to lose a puppy.

I couldn't believe it when I saw them with yet another Weimaraner! They both work full time, although the man has the sort of job which means he can call in and walk the dog a lot during the day. They do go out regularly though and this weimaraner obviously doesn't like being left.

I happened to see the neighbours pulling out of their drive yesterday at about 4.00pm. The dog started howling straight away and was still going at 8.00pm. I don't know if they came back home and thats why it stopped but it did eventually stop.

I feel that I can't complain because I have dogs who make an absolute racket everytime I get the leads out, although this is short lived because they stop as soon as we set off on our walk.

However, if there are other people here with weimaraners please be aware that your dog may start howling the minute you leave your house and, as in the case of our neighbours' dog, stops if it hears their car and therefore they probably don't realise it has been howling for hours.

I can put up with it because its during the day but I feel really sorry for the dog. We've had neighbour problems before and don't want to start anything by complaining about their dog. I do wonder though if they actually know that it howls at all.

Try pointing it out to them from the angle of "Poor doggy sounds upset, perhaps when you go out leave him with a wonderful treat/toy?". That way it doesn't sound like your complaining, but rather concerned for the animal. Plus it informs the neighbours there's an issue (and potentially supplies them with an answer).

Basically really push the concern for the dog, and maybe even state that the noise doesn't bother you since your dogs can make a racket too. Hopefully seem less confrontational.
  • Its hard saying something to your neighbours. But I expect they probably dont realise, after all if the dog is quiet around them, how would they know. I have no idea if its a charitable of the breed.

Of course you must say something, but do so tactfully. If you are very nevous, or afried they will take offence as your dogs also bark, perhaps if you are friends with another neighbour they could speak to them.

I agree with Raggs to mention to dog in destress rather than just the noise, and offer solutions. Leaving the radio on helps some dogs, as does ignoring the dog for ten minutes before leaving the house.

They do sound on the surface like caring owners! Like I said unless they had actually asked the neighbours (or heard their dog on leaving) how would they know.
  • Ask them both to pop round for a Christmas drink, that way they can hear it for themselves, and then as a dog lover yourself, could your perhaps buy their pooch a Kong or something?, it dosent have to cost much, or perhaps say you got it for your dog but he doesn't like it or something along those lines?

We did once tell them when their first Weimaraner kept howling. We had put up with it howling a lot and not said anything. It came to a head one night when it was going absolutely mad and we could even hear it throwing itself at a door. We knew what pub the couple regularly went to and rang the pub asking them to pass a message on to the couple to tell them their dog was going mad. We wouldn't normally do something like this but we could hear that the dog was really in a state.

They came straight home and were quite angry that we had called the pub. I don't think they believed that their dog howled like this every time they went out. They stopped the car a little way from the house and the man walked quietly up the drive to see if we were telling the truth, which we were. They were angry at the situation as much as at us. It turned out that the dog had got hold of something out of the bin and really needed to go out.

Because we only had a tiny dog ourselves at the time who had a very quiet bark in comparison I think they also thought that we couldn't possibly hear their dog as much as we said. We have bigger dogs now and I hope they see how loud the sound is between our houses.

They are responsible dog owners and adore their dog like it was their child so there's no concern there. I think they would just take it the wrong way if we mentioned anything.

I love the idea of inviting them round for a drink so that they hear it but they would think it was strange that we have only just invited them round after 22 years of being next door!!! They are the sort of people to wave and say hello but keep themselves to themselves.

    Definitely tell them.

I was unaware of my Zara barking the place down/howling etc whle I was at work for over a year - the neighbours in the old flat never told me because .. they liked her bless them.

And she was quiet when I was coming back home so I never knew till I moved in where I am now.

Here - anothere story - neighbour opposite me (Asian woman) absolutely HATES dogs and makes a big deal of anything.

Zara lets me go to work (no barking) but God forbids I try to leave the flat on Sat or Sunday or after coming back from work trying to go anywhere - she howls the place down.

How does she know when I go to work I have no idea - I leave for work and she is fine till dog walker comes for her and then fine till I get back home.

But I am oonly allowed to go to work - any other atemp of leaving the flat and the hell breaks loose..... with both Zara and later the neighbour...

I now even order all my shopping online and never really leave the flat.

    Serious..... Buuuuuu

She isn't a Pug is she, gettingready?

One of my Pugs lets me do what I like in the mornings and I can go out if need be. Once its the afternoon and about 2.00pm however I can't even go upstairs without letting her come with me. Otherwise she will stand at the bottom of the stairs creating a big fuss. She just has to be wherever I am after lunch.:p

That is what Christmas is for!

Perhaps if the idea of a drink is a bit too much, make it a coffee and a mince pie that way they cant really linger if it isn't going the way you would like it too.

Lets face it they can only say no! You never know you might just get on better afterwards lol.
