Cheque in Dollars - What do I do?

Hi

I've recieved a cheque this morning for $11.38 although in my listings I state international buyers are to pay by GBP only by Paypal ONLY.

What do I do with the cheque do I refuse the payment or say it didn't turn up, but then they might send another one????

What do I do and where do I cash it?

IT is likely to cost you more to cash it than the cheque is worth.

Just email the buyer politely and explain that he has paid by a method you cannot accept and say that once he pays by paypal as per the auction listing you will post his item and return his cheque in the package.

If you don't hear anything then just start the NPB.

email the buyer and let them know

https://www.auctionpix.co.uk is a good cheap way of cashing US cheques

you have every right to refuse the sale as they have paid with a method you don't use

do expect a 'nasty' response, a lot yanks simply don't understand this whole planet does not = american soil thingy, a worrying amount of them believe that the only currency is dollars, and that postage to another state to someone costs the same as a trans-atlantic airmal delivery
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

  • Its just annoying at the moment I seem to be dealing with really silly buyers!

I thought I might get charged I mean its only about £6 and I bet I will be charged at least £5!

It just adds to the length of a transaction though - plus even more annoying they didn't put a slip or a little note as to what they brought - Just a cheque!

    ARRRRggggggHHHHHHH

If I didn't have child care to pay for I'm sure I would stop selling

A few years ago, I had a few US$ cheques, which I managed to cash via my Amex card. This was done as a straight exchange, without any extra charges and the money was just credited to my account. It was the green Amex card (charge card, not credit card). I don't know if they still offer this service.

However, soolin is absolutely right, so if you can't do it without significant expense and hassle, just reject the payment.

And if they get difficult refer them to this page
    http://pages.ebay.com/internationaltrading/internationalbuyer.html#biditem

The paragraph you want is about half way down

"Remember that you must pay the seller the amount agreed in the seller-specified currency using the seller-specified payment method."

Yes, I know that's ebay.com, but that's probably where they entered ebay.

Does this imply that even if the auction is running in one currency, the seller can specify payment in another?

I was bidding on something on UK ebay f(thus priced in £) rom an American, and they stated payment in dollars, but we agreed that if I won, Paypay would take care of everything.

The problem with someone running a (say) UK auction, and wanting payment in another currency is: what would you use for the exchange rate if you did not use paypal?

I would email them and say that the auction was GMP paypal only and can they pay you via paypal.
Also tell them you will tear the cheque up.

Actually, whether you see the item in your home currency, as opposed to the listing currency, is a personal search option. So the listing currency is the one that takes preference. So in your case, if you weren't paying by paypal, it would be up to the seller how much to accept in foreign (to him) currency, if at all. I can't imagine that many sellers would be willing to accept foreign currency in that case.
