Not a very environmentally aware choice and not very nice for the refuse collectors! :p Many people use flushable cat litter or at least flush the solids - when was the last time we had an outbreak of anything attributable to water supply contaminated by cat poo? I looked online and didn't find a water company or government advice not to flush.

Probably just as nice as the dirty nappies and sanitary prods the binmen have to deal with.
The cat gut bacteria affects the bugs at the STW - which is there to treat effluent - not the water supply. So it all ultimately ends up in water courses!

Have you tried your brood on any raw rather than canned or pouch wet? It can be a really cost effective way of adding to dry - Sainsburys Basics have frozen chicken portions for just £1.40 per kilo for example :money: Morrisons sell heart and liver for next to nothing, and some people get offcuts and offal FREE from a local butcher!

Noah doesn't get the toxic, massive poos sick.gif on Orijen or Applaws dry, he just does one small formed smell-free jobbie per day - I just can't believe the difference in just two days when I change his food. I know these brands appear expensive but they do come onto offer quite regularly and, as there is no waste the portions are much smaller, a bag lasts far far longer. And you would hopefully also save money in vets bills, Oust and cat litter!!

FF where do you get your Orijen/Applaws from? I have been looking but haven't yet found either on special offer .

    Hi,

I bought the Litter Kwitter for my kitten a couple of months ago for the same reasons you are thinking of buying one, You do still need litter for the discs but you gradually use less and less.

It's pretty easy to train them, we've only had a few minor problems. You just need patience, some cats get it straight away others need time or a bit of persistence. You can also train multiple cats at the same time.

Our kitten is now on the final stage and is not enjoying it but I'm willing to stick to it until she gets the hang of it.

Also the Litter Kwitter has a really usefull forum on their official website, with loads of hints and tips.

    Hope this helps.

Warning - Orijen Pet Food linked to Cat Deaths
Written By: Susan Thixton11-23-2008Categorized in: Pet Food Recall

There is a report from Australia of five cats that had to be euthanized, due to a very strange illness. The only thing that the five cats had in common was Orijen Cat Food, which is imported into Australia. Orijen is a Canadian pet food company making high quality foods. I use this food as a alternative food for my pets. I will be stopping that immediately until we learn what is going on. If you have a dog or cat (although only cats have said to be effected) on Orijen Pet Foods, please be very cautious using this food.

This did happen quite a while ago - I think they have determined what happened? Some pet food being imported into australia has to be gamma irradiated; and for some reason it was irradiated at a very high level, which caused deterioration of vitamins in the food and also formation of free radicals. So (A) it wasn't a complete food anymore and after a while of eating it the cats developed various problems related to not having enough vitamin A among other things; and (B) too many free radicals in the body causes all kinds of problems :-(

So essentially it was the irradiation causing the problems not the food itself and they have stopped selling it in Australia. It isn't irradiated in any other country.

Have a read of this, hopefully it will put your mind at rest.
