Litter Kwitter - Anyone tried it?

  • Ultimately the Company that deals with your waste would recommend you don't do this!
You should "bin and bag it" as cats have different bacteria from humans and may not be effectively treated by your local Sewage Treatment Works!

Not a very environmentally aware choice and not very nice for the refuse collectors! :p Many people use flushable cat litter or at least flush the solids - when was the last time we had an outbreak of anything attributable to water supply contaminated by cat poo? I looked online and didn't find a water company or government advice not to flush.

I live in a gardenless flat in the middle of town, so soil is out for me unfortunately. Sand sounds like a good idea, but we don't drive, so getting it home would be a problem (unless I had it delivered, but then the shipping cost would be prohibitve). We don't read the papers, but we do shred all our bills & stuff. Do you think this could work, or would it be too scratchy?

As for chic crumb, I have to admit I'm not sure what that is! :embarasse

Not all online pet suppliers charge by weight of articles ordered: I think Zooplus & petsupermarket do not but fairly certain other MSE forum contributors will know of others.

Having read about weavils developing in chic crumb I think it would be adviseable for only those who can store it in a cold place to try this.

I only buy tesco value litter and have 2 cats. I only notice a smell if the younger cat has eaten something he shouldn't off, and he ends up with eggy poos!

I have a hooded litter box and a tray, and they both go in the hooded one to poop (great!) and wee in the tray.

My younger cat loves pooping/weeing when I'm in the middle of cleaning the boxes, and will easily go just on the tray with no litter there, though he still scratches at the plastic bottom thinking he's covering his buisness :rotfl:

I also scoop poops and soiled litter into scented nappy bags, so it stops whiffs coming from the bin or wherever you put it :)

What when a human wants to use the loo? Take that thingy out andput it back in all the time...

What about all that litter all over the place?

No, ultimately the cats learn to just perch on the normal loo seat and go, with no litter to scratch and no device. That's the goal, and its not imposible...but as I say, it was something we decided not to persue for our cats ''emotional well being''. :)
  • There is no need to buy a special device like Litter Kwitter, you can do much simpler. Just one link I have found http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html I would love to try this. AS posted above ultimately the cat needs no litter and I bet if you had a bright cat you could teach him to flush! No seriously we have a cat taht opens doors and he isn't the first that we have had that does this. Although he is the first that doesn't have to jump! He can reach - he is a Maine Coon and stands as tall as a toddler (weighs over 18 lbs and isn't fully grown yet)!

Give it a go, you start by putting the litter tray next to the toilet and gradually raising it to toilet height, then you put a bowl (with litter in it)in the toilet high up ( that is where the kwitter might come in, although you could probably buy a cheap bowl from wilko that would fit), then gradually lower it until eventually you remove the bowl.

Couldn't do it with my cat - she's missing a back leg and would fall in!

Here is a cat that can work a light switch, not so far from a modern toilet flush:

Yes, ours can push a button flush. In fact, till we moved back here, with handle flushes, it got a bit annoying: it became a bit of a game  again, its not the hardest thing in the world to teach a confident cat....first flush they manage can cause some commotion though;)
