Thanks :) The company I work with is on Orange and I have to explain it all the time. It's a great piece of technology, better than spending £160 on a femtocell!

Do you know if there is T-Mobile coverage? It IT acceptable? These two newtworks are shortly to merge, so you'll probably find the problem will resolve itself.

It will take ages to resolve iotself. even after merging the cost involved to merge the networks is very costly and networks tend to keep away from it. Networks tend to move new customers onto to the better network of the 2. and slowly merging th equipment but I cant see them starting to do that for the least 2 -3 years after the merger (That is if it does take place).

One thing they might be able to do for you is something called on fixed line as ADSL. It is when they provide you service through another network. Ask them about it, it could mean that they might charge you extra but it wil be better than paying the rest of you lie rental for nothing.

If it does not work then the only other suggestion is to downgrade you line to a cheaper tarriff but on 18 months you might have to wait for 9 - 12 months to pas and pay the remainder off.

the last solution is if you want to make a call then drive to somewhere where orange do cover make the call and drive back home.
  • i have the same problem with orange, my signal downstairs is non existant but upstairs i can get a decent signal so i complained and they did reduce my tarriff for me to be fair as i was getting about an hours worth of dropped calls re creditied to me each month, which was just getting annoying

Yep, the merger has not been accepted, even if it is as above it is over a year away and even then there would be a transmission period of swapping over the network signals to one frequency.

Orange and T-Mobile use the same GSM frequency of 1800mhz and also the merger has been approved by everyone it just needs the contracts signing.

So shouldnt be too long a process

They might use the same GSM frequency but merging the networks will still take an age, it's not going to be as easy as flicking a switch
  • The frequency might be the same but does not mean that they will be coming of the same type of equipment. also the way companies datafill on switches is never the same so it could be a nightmare trying to merge networks. A lot of planning, manpower and knowledge is required.

I know companies that have merged for over 4 - 5 years and still have not merged their networks due to how complex it is.

Also with all the financial crisis companies will twice before they start any kind of merging work

The cost saving aspect of merging the networks means it will be done, but it'll take a long time to plan and an even longer time to put in place

there are times when companies after merging tend to keep their networks separate for the reason of diversity. It provides security in providing excellent service to premium customers mainly buisiness customers.

And it is not always cost saving by merging everyone into one network. If the switches used are different it will mean the network provider will need to buy new switches and servers to move customers onto if the existing switches are not compatible with each other. But most of the time they do tend to understand each other
