  • I wonder if they would be glad to get rid of the dog...? they may feel lumbered with him, and not really want him at all - is he a breed of dog that would be easy to rehome? Poor doggo, it sounds like he was a loyal pal to his owner, and now is being neglected - he must be dreadfully lonely.
  • Update......well i listen to the poor dog all day on saturday then i got so angry i put on my coat and shoes and marched round there , once there i didnt know what to do i couldnt go to there door so i took a note off there door number ( wouldnt have been able to get in the garden they have a high fence all around its like fort knox & the garden is like steptoes yard !
Got back into my house phoned enviromentaay health who was closed at wkend so monday morning i called them they said they would send out a dog warden.

Dog warden called me Tuesday morning to tell me he had went to the house and looked over the fence , knocked there door etc but no answer and he didnt hear the dog i said well it will be a hit and miss and that he should come and stay with me for a few nights ! he said he will go out again and if no answer he will write to them and he will post me some log sheets which i have to log the times etc when dog howls....so just waiting on that as the poor thing has been howling all evening again

oh i did say to him surly you must have had more complaints , he said one more

so i shall wait and see poor thing

As long as the dog has shelter, food and water then its fine. If the noise is causing a nusiance then complain to your local council, keep a dairy of the noise. The officer who deals with it will give the householder pratical advice about how to stop the noise as well as warning them about what will happen if they don't stop it. The owner may just be ignorant to it and not realise its causing a nusiance. But if you don't contact the council then nothing can be done.

  • Worridsik - I'm experiencing a similar problem to you with a neighbours dog. It is sadly kept in the garden as a cheap version of a burglar alarm and recently broke through the fence (probably in a bid for freedom!) The dog kept going into everyones gardens and when my fiancee asked the owner to patch the fence up incase the dog ran into the road, she said she basically didnt know what to do with the fence and that if the dog was in our garden again we were to give it a wack  Insead of mending the hole I think she has tied the dog up, which breaks my heart as it's now probably worse off than ever. I was going to call the RSPCA to ask if this is allowed but after reading your post I can now see that it is. I realise dogs are fine outside, but it would be nice to know that owners had to provide some form of shelter for them. Makes me so sad, especially when my dog is sat indoors in the warm with us and we can hear the neighbours dog crying outside.

Pinkpeach......Unfortunatly it is legal to have the dog tied up in there yard i was astounded to hear this from the RSPCA but they did tell me that there may be new legislation soon to make this illegal ! i personnally think it should be illegal to tie an animal up after all isnt it illegal to cage tigers and lions etc

Was awake all night again listning to the poor dog howling, i dont understand how it doesnt upset the owners ! unless they have gone away over night or just dont bloody care ....how bloody curtious off them eh ?

Maybee you should ring the RSPCA anyway and see what they say i dont know when & if this new legislation is taking place

 imagine her telling you to whack it  ohhhh god some people make you sick

  • pinkpeach.....i do think owner has to provide shelter which the dog does have but its bloody freezing outside now its such a shame

if the dog near you doesnt have shelter then i think you should call RSPCA good luck i know its heart breaking it upsets me so much

I have a feeling the only shelter the dog may have had is underneath the large trampoline which is in the garden - so not at all weatherproof. The neighbour who is in between us both ended up putting some wire fencing across the hole in the fence, so I can't now see where the dog is.

I think I will call the RSPCA, I've been feeling quite awful about it over the past few weeks knowing the dog is in this situation. At least then I'll have tried to do something. Sadly I live in an area of Bristol where several people seem to have 'backyard' dogs. Many people round my way don't seem to care much about their own kids so I do wonder about their animals. My dog is spoilt rotten so it breaks my heart to know others aren't so lucky.

Its not always kinder to have dogs inside.

We have had a kennal with a large run, but a larger run than can often be provided. We have never chained a dog BUT I can see time it might be acceptable alternative: e.g. through the day for a farm dog, when gates are open for tractors coming in and out, the dog must be restrained to stop it getting on to a road or in the way. a nice run might be ideal, but IMO a chain is preferable to a small room, and unstimulating environment.

Its not uncommon for dogs to not be in a house, (it wouldn't suit me personally, I hav them to love them and part of their ''job'' is to be inside being cuddled) but I know a lot of working dogs kept ''outside'' who thrive, but they have access to somewhere dry, draught free and comfortable to sleep.

I think it is perhaps misleading to generalise. BUT this dog doesn't sound happy at all. I think I would persevere with the sound nuisance route at the same time as getting RSPCA involved.

    Poor dog :(
