I cut all my childrens hair.. and am doing hubbys tonight.

The boys are attacked with the clippers.. the clippers were £18 about .. 6 years ago.

The girls have long hair, no fringe.. so I comb it all flat and cut straight across the back.. when they did have a fringe.. ages and ages ago.. I combed the fringe hair straight forward and stuck something on my nose and made them look at that and talked about it while I held their chin and cut it straight across.. I did find it is easier to cut the fringe dry.. that way you know it will be straight.. and the back wet. Bits of the fringe lift when they are dry so it does make a big difference... especially if they have a calf lick or something.. and I use the kitchen scissors..

Hubby I do with the clippers and finish with scissors.

DS3 is best.. he screams the entire time I am doing his.

I also cut my mothers hair.

I was cutting my own hair last year, it's great fun! I've got curly hair, which I wear in a shaggy mop, perfect for hiding any slightly uneven trimming! I haven't cut it since the summer though, as I want it a bit longer for ease of putting up in a ponytail, now I've got a baby nearly here.
I would imagine that keeping boys hair short, with clippers, and girls hair long, and just trimming the ends, would keep it simple and minimise any possible mistakes.
For trimming hair - grab a small section, twist it and then snip into the ends.
The straighter the hair, the more risk that any mistakes will show.
If you start practicing when they're young, they won't mind as much!
Mum's got a book from the early 1980s called 'How to cut your own or anyone else's hair' which I shall be acquiring very soon. If anyone wants the instructions for an Aha-esque mullet, I will scan them in!

My mum used to cut mine, it was awful and I got teased at school :( I looked like cousin it for years. My brothers looked okay though. Maybe she just liked him more :(

and........it just reminds me of the yellow pages advert where he tries to cut his niece's hair and blames the hairdresser... :rotfl:

Talking of haircuts, has anyone tried clipping their dog? Ours cost £22 each for a cut and blow dry.

I cut DH's hair with clippers.

I cut the boys' hair too but will have to start getting it done at the hairdresser for them starting school as it's pretty ragged.

I cut my own. I put it in a ponytail, twist it tightly and cut across it in a straight line.

I found out how to do the boys' hair from the tightwad gazette.

    Hi beckstar,

There's an older thread that might help so I'll add your thread to it to keep all the suggestions together.

This thread might give you some ideas too:
