I trim DH's hair as it's waist-length and he only ever wants the ends tidied.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

I got some professional thinning shears (scissors) from boots and they are great for doing home layering, also good for softening the edges of a not so good home trim so it doesn't look like it was done with garden shears..lol

Although recently afer having my baby my o.h treated me to a haircut at the best place nearby, and she was horrified at the cut and asked who had done it before..I lied and said I'd been to a terrible salon , as it was a very snooty place and I didn't want the sneering at admitting to cutting it myself..hehee

But then...she did a rubbish job, and sprayed so many products on it wouldn't move for a week..hehe! I much prefer how it is when I do it!

https://www.hairboutique.com has some great forums on it and lots of tips on doing home cuts.

Interesting thread. As I'm going thin on top and like my hair quite short I decided I couldn't be bothered paying £6-£8 a month plus tip in a barber shop. So I got a hair trimming set on sale in Woolworth's for £9.99 and had a go. It's fairly easy to do a simple all over crew cut but you need to have good lighting and two mirrors to see the back of your head. It took me about an hour to do but it gets easier so I am told. The basic cut looks a bit like Phil off of 'Location Location Location'.

As for doing someone else's hair, this would be even easier with a clipper set as you can see all round. Cutting layers with scissors might be harder though.

Bogoff Babe, my father had the same problem with barbers, he is unable to go due to Parkinson's disease, (can't get to the barber easily and can't keep his head still when he's in the chair) so he contacted the local old fogies home who have a very nice lady on call who does home visits and understands the problems old people have.

I've got fairly long hair, dead straight, and havent been to a hairdresser for ages.

If I fancy layers, I put the pony tail on top of my head and cut off the ends.

If I want it one length, I put the pony tail at the bottom of my head, top of my neck. I then pull the bobble out a few inches, downwards. I do this so that when I cut, the sides arent longer than the back, which they could be if the sides have had longer to travel to get to the bobble than the back. I then cut at whatever length I choose.

If I decided on a fringe.....it gets tricky!! But the rule I use is ~ a bit at a time. I do a very thin fringe first, and pull the hair down and cut it so it is long enough to get in my eyes. I can then cut little bits more off if it's too long. A fringe toolong looks a lot better than one too short, and you can always cut a bit more off!!

DH and DS's usually get the clipper treatment, but sometimes demand a longer cut so i have to use scissors and comb. It gets easier and you get more skilled with more practice.

When I can't wait until my next salon appointment, I tend to thin my hair out by (carefully) using a standard hand-held razor - the sort you would use for shaving your legs and trying a little at a time until I get the desired effect. In fact I've been doing it for so long, I am now quite confident at it! Good luck.
