can i pick you brain regarding tomatoes please

hi... growing tomatoes and they are coming along nicely.... i have pinching out the side shoots, and the biggers ones that have gone un noticed i have pinched out and put them in water, they have rooted really quickly... so will be planting them up....i am sure that i have read or seen somewhere that i will be able to get a late small crop from these.. is this right.? ....if this is right next year that's all i need is one plant, and take side shoot cuttings early on....
also when do i put the banana skin in the pot ? cant remember if it is when you transplant or when they are in fruit.... as my tomatoes are just fruiting now... so i dont want to give them artificial food... i have been giving them a feed of old chicken manure bedding watered down....to a very weak solution...seem to be doing geat guns on it.....
hope i have put this in the right place, as i am trying to garden old style....

I'm new to this, and my tomatoes are now growing.
I have no idea what a side shoot is, or what they look like.
Could someone please explain? My tomatoes are the first thing I have ever grown.

hi.. first of all if you put a banana skin in the bottom of the pot... banana skins are high in potasium... so good minerals for tomatos but i cant remember if its good for growing for for fruiting.....
the side shoots are the growths that grows between the stems and the leaf shoots ..they need to be pinched out ....so all the goodness and growth go to where you want it..

Right.
On the stem of each of the plants was a pair of leaves, then a big gap to the main set of leaves.

Drat, I just went out to make an attempt at de-shooting ours (always been left to hubby in the past, on the grounds that he knows what he's doing) and apparently I should not have picked out the shoots with tiny flowers on - these are where the tomatoes would have grown :eek: .
Just thought I'd share this, now that hubs has put me right
, in the hope it may be of use to any other novice tomato growers.

Lol, don't worry - there was only one that was starting to flower, so that one got the chop, but I am sure there will be more. I jolly well hope so - we have three plants!
Best way to learn - by our mistakes!
