What can Iphones do and Orange query?

I am thinking of getting an Iphone but need a little bit of advice as to what they can and cannot do.

At the moment I have a Nokia phone with Nokia PC Suite software. This means I can compose a text on my computer and then send it to multiple people. Mainly for sending football results on a Saturday for when supporters of other clubs are returning home from their matches. The level of football I follow do not get their results read out on the radio anymore. Some of these text end up being the equivilent of 5 or 6 texts so is a bit too fiddly to do on the phone. Is there software for the Iphone to do a similar thing?

Orange - at the moment I am on Dolphin 35 contract since about January 2007. It was an 18 month contract. I don't recall taking out another 18 month contract so could I end this contract at any time (with whatever notice) or will I likely have taken out further 18 month contracts without realising?

The reason I ask is it looks as though the Iphone contract (with Orange) gives you the same as what I'm already getting but with the addition of free web access but for the same price.

And why I am deciding to upgrade - well, with an Iphone I can leave my car and mark its location on the phone and find my way back to it. A lot easier than carrying a big bag of rice with me and leaving a trail - especially when it's windy or rainy. I have no sense of direction so when I saw I could do this with an Iphone I thought - that's just the thing for me.

  • As to the contract, since you served your minimum 18 months you are allowed to cancel giving 30 days notice OR requesting your PAC code and USING it.

However, if you accepted an upgrade (new phone), change in tariff, then it is possible you may have accepted a new contract which you would have to check the end date on. Best bet is dial 150 from your phone and ask customer services if you have finished serving your minimum term.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

I've never had a new phone - they did phone me up a while back and ask me but I didn't want to choose one without knowing more about them. I think their website was playing up at the time and wouldn't actually tell me which phones I could choose.
  • You should be ok, but do ring up orange customer services (150) just to check. If it has been served you only have to give 30 days notice to cancel.

I don't know what the IPhone can do, it just has alot of applications (like a computer) and a great touch screen which is where the power is. If the Nokia 5800 / N97Mini had a better touch screen and decent apps on the OVI store it wouldn't be all that different.

I have had an Iphone from day 1, and its brilliant!!! the apps on there are amazing and loads are totally free. Goggle just updated their Iphone app so now it has voice search, so if I want shall we say football results I just say football results and hey presto the page opens up with the results. To be honest it is as close to a computer you can get, if it didn't have the phone I would still buy 1.

I'll probably rarely use it as a phone if I get one.
  • I can't answer your question about composing texts on the computer and then sending them. But... I am also on Orange and I was on Dolphin 35. I upgraded to an iPhone about a month ago. The call packages are totally different on the iPhone but thankfully, one of them is very similar to Dolphin 35.

I now get 600 mins and 500 texts and unlimited (within a fair usage policy) web browsing all for £35. It's a 24 month contract but the 8GB iPhone was free.

I'm really pleased with my new phone (well, anything would be better than the Sony Ericsson thing I had!!!) so I definitely recommend it!

Ive been speaking to orange this evening regarding an upgrade.

At the moment I get 1200 mins, unlimited calls to orange, and 500 text and unlimited web. I currently pay £35.00 a month line rental and the advisor said I could get an iphone for free if i paid 44.04 a month on a 18 month contract.

Im unsure whether to go for it as im not really a gadget person. I only use my phone to talk, text , take the odd drunken picture and quickly check my facebook now and again.

I don't think I really need too many minutes. Do your previous Magic Numbers still count with this contract - that's how I don't need so many minutes as my big calls are covered by Magic Numbers. I think I'll need to look at my phone bills to see how many minutes I use each month and how many texts I actually send.

This will be the clincher. I know of no way to hook up my iphone and use a computer to send a text via it... there isn't an app for that.. ;)

However the virtual keyboard is very good and is full qwerty which makes things easier to use than a standard phone keypad

p.s. my brother tells me the camera on the iphone is a let down compared to his other phones. So keep that in consideration if you plan to use it alot.

The Sony Satio (software bug withstanding) has a great camera.
