  • Also might be worth getting a sat nav with a speed camera alert on it.
  • I was offered the course for doing 37 in a 30 in leicestershire, we were told 37 was the max speed for the offer for a course, doh!!!
Google gives you answers use it.........
  • Most important thing at this stage is to return the form asap admitting that you were the driver, or if it was not you to name who the driver was.

If you fail to do so you could be prosecuted for failing to give the relevant information and, if prosecuted, that offence carries a mandatory 6 penalty points.

If you do reach 6 points as a new driver your licence gets revoked until you pass your test again which is different from disqualification. In theory you could re-apply for your test virtually as soon as your licence is revoked. Although I would not take the chance of going down that route.

As previously suggested worth phoning the camera safety partnership tochsee what their local policy is. Good luck

If they offer you a speed awareness course, as I think they will, one of the first things you will be asked on the course is 'why were you speeding?'. You and everyone else will say 'because I wasn't concentrating' (that's how it was on my course:rolleyes:).

The courses are very interesting and illuminating. Go on it and come out a better, more tolerant driver.

Learning to drive starts the moment you pass your test. Until then you've only been learning to pass the test.

Sorry to hear that, but there's not much you can do, you were caught, you just have to accept it!

For the ticket to say 40mph in a 30, your speedo probably read about 43-45mph, they're never completely accurate and are usually a few above the actual limit anyway.

Just go carefully in future, and know where the cameras are in your local area!

Statistically everyone will eventually be caught out on main roads where there is constant switching between 30 and 40.

Have an up to date satnav with camera warning switched on at all times.

Someone one told me 76.4% of all statistics were made up on the fly!

Probably better to learn to concentrate on the road before bringing additional distracting features into the car such as satnav.

I disagree slightly they can be a useful tool for some drivers and not really a distraction, they can be set to beep warning of cameras and some to beep if you exceed the local limit. If you are prone to missing things they will nag you into compliance.

I've received 3 points on 3 occasions over the last 10 years and the general process is that you receive an initial form confirming that you were the driver (sounds like the one you've received) and then it's followed up with a further letter giving you your options. In my case it's always been 3 points & a £60 fine or dispute and take it to court. I've always paid up (as always guilty!) so no idea on the court process.

The switching speed limits really do test your concentration at times however it's one of those things you really do need to be aware of. The tip about knowing where cameras in your local area is a very good one and also worth knowing where the local police speed traps are.

In terms of the driver awareness option, Not only does the speed you were doing impact whether you are offered it but I also believe it depends on whether the courses are offered in your area. It's never been offered to me however my last ticket was back in 2007.

... If you are prone to missing things they will nag you into compliance.

If you are prone to missing things, consider carefully your ability to drive.

If you fail to see huge speed limit signs or brightly coloured safety cameras that are about 12ft tall, I suspect you might also fail to see that 3ft small child in front of you!

Depends on the amount of "street furniture" where you are. Near me there is a junction where there are at least 6 signs or notices for one direction. People get it wrong because of overload, one clear sign and on road markings would do the job. It has been noticed when they clean up all the distractions outside the car accident rates really do fall.
