If you don't want to stand out then may suggest you look at renting in Croydon.
Quick links into London esp from East Croydon where you can get the fast train to either Victoria/London Bridge and I believe Charing cross stations. So you'll have no trouble getting to work in central London.

Tek-monkey you are out of order. You claim the OP is 'playing the race card' and then go and play 'the PC brigade' card yourself. This thread was a lively and intelligent debate until you and Roses started stirring it. I packed up my job in Cambridge to move to Bradford three years ago and was on JSA for oooohhh three whole weeks. Feel free to slag me off for being a benefit thief/ scrounger/ living off taxpayers money.

what a terribly sad indictment of our society - that a young man has had so many violent attacks in his life, just because of the colour of his skin.

i travel to various parts of lancashire quite often, and it really grieves me that racism is soooo endemic - talking to taxi drivers, folks at bus stops, in cafes, shops etc etc - almost every white person i speak to assumes that i am as racist as they are....

i agree wholeheartedly that london has a much more "international" feel to it - and if that is where OP wants to live - AND to fund himself for 2-3 months whilst job hunting what on earth is wrong with that ??

Young folks have gone to the Capitol for centuries to make their fortunes... i certainly did

    good luck to you OP

I grew up on the Aylesbury Estate in Southark. If anybody thinks this is an area of opportunity and community harmony thay have never stayed there for more than 5 minutes. I got out but still know a few people living there, and I for one would not want to live in the place if I could help it.

Err, what makes you think I'm not Asian?

because you are white. You know it and I know it. I see you're playing the PC Correct brigade card and the 'I have dated/am friends with every race under the sun, but...' card. Classic hallmark.

As I said though, I don't care what you think. I know what's happened and only another minority knows what I'm saying. I'm a citizen, I've payed years of taxes, I'm entitled to do what I want and claim what i am eligible for as long as it's within the law.

Also since you hate anyone and everyone on benefits. That must mean you've always been in full time employment since you left school, never been made redundant, never claimed any tax benefit, never needed to claim any housing benefit, never needed to claim any child benefit or claimed anything at all from the state. come from a good area with no racism at all, even though you're asian as you say (lol, bolloc*s....) ie, easy life with no problems. I haven't claimed most of that stuff myself. No kids, never moved away from my parents and signed on sporadically between jobs and Uni. I want to move down to work, as millions of other have over the years. London is better than here, I'm a citizen and I have a right to live there if i find a way to live there. I can get a job easier than than here, due to the current area im in is awful and racist. and easier to find a job if i have a base 24/7 down there. Infact not working would be almost unsustainable. I'll be eating cereal 3 meals a day if I got a room and didn't get a job eventually.

OP some people may have posted some cr*p here but you need to stop with the 'because you're white you can't understand' thing. That's a stifling way to operate. Don't limit yourself by writing off whole swathes of people.

It's really sad that you've had such a horrible time living somewhere where people think it's OK/normal to abuse you, verbally and physically, because you're black. Lots of people harbour nasty, little, bigotted thoughts but don't act on them. You're more than right to want out of your situation and to move to somewhere where behaviour is moderated rather than emboldened by local culture.

OK, on to practicalities. I don't know how quickly rooms get snapped up but I just did a search on bedsits and rooms priced between £60 and £90 on www.loot.com and 180 ads came up.

You can find a list of online local papers to 'flick through' here http://www.mydigitalnewspaper.com/atoz.aspx?id=1 and ask your mates to keep an eye out for ads in local shop windows.

In terms of job hunting - what is it you're looking to do? - big agencies Eden Brown, Morgan Hunt and Hays are good for white collar/LA work both temporary and permanent. All googleable.

Oh and don't eat cereal 3 times a day - it'll give you the squits - not great for your interview technique... ;)
Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response. :D

Check out the Old Style board - loads of ideas on how to feed yourself healthily on a very tight budget. Weezl74's thread 'Eat Healthily on 50p per Day' is particularly inspiring! :D I actually don't find either cereal (unless Smartprice) or milk (unless dried) that cheap any more ...

  • Lay off this guy, he's obviously had a bad time of it and its a ghastly story to hear in Britain in 2009. He's trying to get to a place of refuge and London is ideal, Southwark specifically will fit the bill perfectly for all the aforementioned reasons (I've lived there).

I think it will work out well and personally, as a taxpayer, paying a bit of Housing Benefit now will be a great investment.

Btw OP first thing you do, get yourself an Oyster card and a bus map and go travelling- £1 a ride.:T
