TV Licence buy it and fund the TV version of the Guardian or you are fined and get get a criminal record.
If they put twice the funding into the BBC I'd willingly pay double.

The BBC is one of the few things in the UK which is not foreign owned, and which still enjoys world class reputation.

I agree, stopped paying mine in September. The BBC don't like me anymore and are now sending out letters calling me a criminal and threatening to send an "officer" to check my property. I'm not evading as I no longer watch live TV, so will choose not to let them in without a warrant and police officer.
I use i-player /4OD etc to catch up when it suits me.
It's also very liberating to not be ruled by "the box".

You need a tv licence to legally watch iplayer.

In the last world cup, tv licencing sent letters to all employers advising that if staff watch tv on the internet, & the business doesn't hold a tv licence, then the business is liable.

Cue loads of employees being peeved that bosses banned footy on the web.

Strictly speaking, the way the law is phrased, IIRC it isn't about being caught red handed watching tv, but you can actually be done if you don't have a licence, yet have a tv capable of picking up a signal.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

You only need a licence to watch programmes "as they are being broadcast". You Do not need a licence for an untuned television for watching dvd's or games consoles.
Watching TV on the internet You need to be covered by a licence if you watch TV online at the same time as it's being broadcast on conventional TV in the UK or the Channel Islands.Video recorders and digital recorders like Sky+ You need a licence if you record TV as it's broadcast, whether that's on a conventional video recorder or digital box.Mobile phones A licence covers you to watch TV as it's broadcast on a mobile phone, whether you're at home or out and about.

LA's budgets are actually only 15% (approx) made up by council tax paid by local residents.

Business rates make up approx 25%.

The rest comes from central government.

Which is why I giggle sometimes at those who state "I pay my council tax..." about stuff. It actually contributes small fry, relatively speaking.

Thought LAs budgets were 30% council tax.

About half funding comes via central government (which doesn't actually have any money of it's own but just reappropriates other tax deductions as it sees fit).

Effectively the taxpayer/council taxpayer does pay for the majority of council spending and isn't a merely 'small fry' contributor.

Only going on what I was advised by the person in the training dept at 1 particular LA. Admittedly this was 2 years ago. However the person in question was responsible for training the finance team, so I have no reason to doubt them.

I believe it will vary from LA to LA.

It's moot anyway. TV Licensing don't actually do anything other than send out scary looking letters every 2 weeks for the most part. I didn't have a licence for nearly 9 years at one place I lived and every letter from them went in the bin. There was one period where they went mad with the "our officers in are your area and will be calling" cards and in fact one did indeed turn up one day. I answered the door (obviously not knowing who it was) and got a load of blah about the property being unlicensed and I just told him I didn't have a TV. He asked if he could have a quick look round to check and I said no. After a load more blah about £1000 fines and another bunch of scare-mongering yada, he toddled off on his way. They actually have no powers at all and can't do !!!!!! if you tell them they can't come in.

I slipped up many years later though as I had the front door open while I was unloading my car and my OH was inside watching telly. One of their officers turns up and caught me :p. End result was that I got a £200 fine for not having a licence. I thought it was a pretty good deal after 9 years of watching telly without one! :rotfl:

    TV Licence,
Any of you need to find out more on resisting the TV licence should check here.

Many think that detector vans exist and are real.
As a TV is a receiver, not a transmitter, there is no signal for them to detect.

    5. Council tax, how did this get so out of control?? Mines gone up from £450 to £2100 a year since labore got in !!!! How do low income familys afford to pay this sledgehammer tax?

    4. Inheritance tax, the money was earnt and taxed levied on it, why do they get to tax it again ...

    3. Road fund tax, meant to be used to maintain the road infrastructure, 80% of it gets nicked, roads are in dire state in london ...

    2. Petrol tax, just outrageous to be paying what 70% tax ...

    1. Speed camera tax, a tax based on a lie enforced by mindless sheep unable to think for themselves.

    Absolutely correct.

BBC news certainly is. I'm not so sure about the rest of it.

BBC news is probably the only thing that British people claim is the 'envy of the world' that actually is.

Every soccer fan that I've met wants to score the winner in The Final (whatever final that may be) at Wembley which I think most English people don't realise.

The engineering support services side of the BBC was really highly regarded in the past. How true that is now I don't know.
