Hi there

I wonder if anybody can help?

My daughter went out on the town last night and lost the Sony Ericsson W800i we gave her.

We brought the handset from CarphoneWarehouse a couple of months ago and she popped into it a free orange sim.

Ive called up ornage and they have put a bar on the sim but is there anyway i can block the phone ie blacklist it so the person who things they have a brill find will realise they might not have such a brill find?

Any ideas ... i have the IMEI number.

Thanks in advance.

Yummy

I would ring Carphone Warehouse. When my daughter lost her phone Virgin blocked the sim and the phone as we had bought it from them :)

for everything the carphone warehouse can do there are hackers that can reverse it, there are methods out there to change the IMEI No, but i doubt a random person who finds the phone will realise this :)

So the question is ... Is it even worth bothering getting it barred?

Well, there's never going to be any actual benefit to you getting the handset blocked, but you do get the satisfaction of knowing you've made life harder for anyone who has taken it.

Once a handset is barred it can still be used if the IMEI number is changed (and doing this will be different for every different type of phone and so may not be possible/or, at the very least, not easy on a newish phone). It can also be used if taken overseas (as most countries don't have barred lists and those that do don't share their numbers).

Out of interest, did you try calling the phone before blocking the sim? If I found a phone then I would probably look in the phonebook for "Home" and call it, but if you've blocked the sim they can't do this. :o

question is, was your daughter at a club or such? if so, somebody might have handed it in. Check with the local police station aswell, never know, there are actually some honest people out there. call CPW and tell them, they will block it.
Never do things tomorow when you can do them today.

Yes she was at a club and they did say they will call home if somebody hands it in but nothing as of yet

just so you know, i have had many people ask me to unlock phones for them as they have been blocked, asking for puk codes, or simply removing the network restriction, just to let you know that who ever has the phone all they will need to do is pop it to one of the local market stall and you'll probably find they will have it working fine within 10 minutes and they will be £10 up (well thats what i charge)

i am not trying to put you off blocking the handset as it keeps money in my pocket lol, but just saying that even if you do block it within 30 minutes they can have it working again, also if they were only visiting the UK if you phone a network to have a phone (NOT Sim) blacklisted it will only stand in this country take it to europe and it'll work fine. Finally if your daughter put an orange sim card in the phone did she not register the sim and phone with orange because they can blacklist the handset you do not need to go to CPW to do this.

    Hope that made sense.

There is a slight difference in unlocking a phone and the changing of an IMEI number, and a market trader, even if they have the software/hardware to change the IMEI number is unlikely to do so for someone they didn't know very well as the fines imposed for changing IMEI numbers is high.

Usually, with Orange they block the sims which intern blocks the phone it is in, I had this happen myself a while back...changed the phone then lost it...rang orange who blocked the sims....found phone and phone was blocked as well, had major hassle from orange on getting the phone unbarred as it wasn't registered to the sims.
    Welcome, rogerramjet.

if you actually read what i put my friend it is quite obvious that it says blocked, puk code requests and network restrictions, thought you would get the bit where i have said BLOCKED phones as meaning changing IMEI numbers, i can do this for a small fee because i dont actually change the IMEI but so far using my method i have succesfully "Unblocked" 19 phones and not one has ever become faulty or blocked.
