In this particular instance I wouldn't recommend Snopes. It says in big red letters true at the top of the page. This is because this scam did sort of happen a few years ago. You have to scroll down to get the bigger picture. So anyone logging on could see "true" and not bother with the rest of the page.
Instead I recommend Hoax Slayer which says right at the top " Was true, but the scam was shut down in late 2005" .What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -

But it IS true! Remember Alistair Campbell on BBC Watchdog? Just back in September time? They were called Parcel Express UK that time though.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

THIS scam didn't happen as is always reported, that is the point. Snopes reports accurately what actually happened.
The money was made by the punter being kept on the 'phone for a whole 6 minutes which cost the grand sum of £9, NOT £15, £100 or £350 for just dialling the number
If people on this website can't be bothered to read things to which they are referred, there is no point into trying to do more to protect them from their own laziness - or stupidity !0 -

All I was saying is that I prefer Hoax Slayer because it says right at the top "Was true, but the scam was shut down in late 2005", instead of Snopes with it's rather misleading "true" at the top of its page. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0
