OK go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections and right click Properties on your Local Area Connection (Ethernet). There should be a check box "Show icon in notification area when connected" Then highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and again click on Properties. If not already checked, check the boxes Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically. Click OK to save.

with linkys routers you dont normally change the DNS settings - there shuldnt be any need to, and i had problems before when i changed them.

ALL linksys routers are http://192.168.1.1 if its not working your computer is not connected to the router.

    1) Is your ethernet cable (looks like a phone line cable) connected in the back of the router under the little computer icon (there should be 4 of these) and then running into the back of your computer into an ETHERNET PORT.

    2) have you installed the LAN drivers for your motherboard if your ethernet card is built in. If not get your disc and install them. If you dont have the disc google the '(motherboard model number) drivers'

    3) If this doesnt work try buying an ethernet card from PCWorld and install it seperately.

    4) return the router and get a more user-friendly Netgear, or buy a pre programmed router from TalkTalk.

espresso, if his router is plugged in properly and is connected to the compute,r but the computer cannot access it via http://192.168.1.1 then its the motherboard drivers. UNLESS the router is !!!!!!ed, but if it were its unlikely the lights would be on.

Espresso, thanks for that, I have done most of what you said, however, I only have a LAN connection, not a LAN (ethernet). On doing what you suggest within the ordinary LAN, I have checked the 'Show icon etc' box and this has appeared near the clock as you said. There were no boxes saying 'obtain IP address and obtain DNS server address automatically'. When I clicked on properties it says RPC Service, which is Windows locator'

    Chris,
I think your right, it is something to do with the motherboard or lack of a LAN, I think the router is fine.

What can I do to fix, if anything?

OK try again, Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections and right click on your LAN. Do you have Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the window? If so highlight it and then click on Properties.
