Wireless problems!

I have read various theads on this, but can't find the answer (or don't know what I'm looking for!!)
I have TalkTalk broadband and bought a Linksys WAG54GS to link to my wife's laptop. When I try to connect it, the correct lights come on except for the Internet, which is either 'red' or not illuminated at all, so I can't go any further when installing it.
I have e-mailed my p.c manufacturer (Mesh) who say it is a 'softwear' issue but not told me what. I e-mailed Linksys support who told me to reset the router, which I did but it has made no difference.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or what the 'softwear' issue is and how to fix it.
Any advice gratefully received!

    Have you had it working with another modem? Have you tried their support pages? You should get the DSL sync light on providing your line has been ADSL enabled even if you can't connect.

    ;)

    i have the WAG54G (similarish) and its been great EXCEPT occasionly the internet wont connect for no apparent reason. If its never connected to the internet then your entering the details wrongly. Email TalkTalk and get the following details:

    You can view your settings and alter them by going on internet explorer, and in the address bar type:

    http://192.168.1.1 username and password are as you have entered on setup, if you didnt change the username it will be 'admin'
    Encapsulation: RFC1483 Bridged / RFC1483 Routed / RFC2516 PPPoE / RFC2364 PPPoA (one of the last 2 are most likely)

    Multiplexing: LLC / VC (VC normally)

    QOS Type: UBR / CBR / VBR (normally UBR or VBR)

    PCR Rate: 0

    SCR Rate: 0

    Autodetect: Disable

    Virtual Circuit - VPI: 0 on mine VCI: 38 on mine

    username: (this will be your primary talktalk email address, like you@talktalk.co.uk)

    password: (same as what you use to log on to the net, access your primary email etc.)

    all of that SHOULD set it up, ask for that information from TalkTalk, and if they dont supply it, threaten to switch ISP.

    Lord_Chris,
    Thanks for that, the only thing is that I never get as far as inputting any details, such as the ones you have detailed.
    Where do I input these if I'm not online?

    Have you checked these settings on you router:

    Most ADSL routers sold in the UK will be ready to connect to TalkTalk Broadband. The settings should be as below. If you have any problems with your router, please contact the manufacturer. We can’t offer any support for hardware we haven’t supplied.

    VPI = 0
    VCI = 38
    DNS settings (primary) 62.24.199.13
    DNS settings (secondary) 62.24.199.23
    Authentication = CHAP
    Encapsulation mode = PPP over ATM (PPoA). VC-MUX

    You will also need your TalkTalk Broadband username and password. You’ll find these in the welcome letter we sent.

    If you set it up correctly, the router will stay connected and you don't use the method of connecting as per the supplied modem. i.e. do not try to connect as before!

    I think that you need to read the user guide that came with your router.

    the linksys routers only come ready to work on BT even when sold in the UK... you can get on the routers setup without being online

    just connect it with an ethernet cable and type in internet explorer
    http://192.168.1.1

    and espresso, the user guide with the WAG54G is crap, it shows the hardware setup, but setting up internet is another thing. Ive worked in a PC shop helping people with stuff like this and it still took me more than half hour to set up the WAG54G

    BTW DO NOT CHANGE THE DNS SETTINGS ON THE LINKSYS, you'll need to reset it if you do. The DNS settings shouldnt need changing, only try that as a last resort.

    Did you install the CD that came with the router? It should have an automatic thing where it asks you for the details for your internet and stuff.

    Yes just connect the Ethernet cable and enter the http://192.168.1.1 address into your browser (assuming that is what your user guide says, as I am not familiar with Linksys)

    .

    You can download a proper User Guide form their website (not a Quick set-up Guide)

    The DNS settings are what TalkTalk specify to enter into the router on their support pages.
