OK - usual problem at this time of year. What's a reasonable tip, and who gets one? Any thoughts?

Postman - comes every day, and does a reasonable job apart from occasional misdeliveries, when he can't seem to read an envelope.

Dustmen - three lots now for different colour bins. Pretty easy job these days, just involving wheeling the bin to the lorry, then wheeling it back again and leaving it inconveniently in the middle of the drive.

Paper Boy - comes every day, rain or shine, reliable.

  • We don't tip the binmen (they aren't officially allowed to take it, and we're not there during daytimes anyway).

We do try to tip the postie as he does do a good job (which we really realise when he is on his 2 weeks summer hols!!). But that depends on us catching him (again - work all day - but may catch him as we leave estate some mornings).

Don't have a paper or milk round. Don't really have any other regular people coming to the house that we'd think of.

If I manage to get to hairdresser, I usually give a slightly better tip than usual. But I have almost given up tipping hairdressers since my old one "retired" 5 years ago in her early 40s with a penthouse in the city and another nice apartment in Spain!!

I have never tipped beautician, and don't give anything just cos it;s Christmas. I'm not regular enough there anymore anyway for it to matter.

  • We don't have a paperboy/girl, we never see/hear the dustmen and our postie was taken off us in the early part of the year as apparently his round was too big and it got split up (:( :( ) and he has been replaced with a series of students/parttimers and we seem to get fitted in here there and everywhere with no consistant time for post delivery and occasionally what seems like a couple of days stored up and then put through so no tip there either.

Always round up my tips to the pound and add an extra 50p if it's past the 50p mark (ie - if it's £4.20 - keep the 80p as a tip. If it's £4.90 - keep the 10p and give an extra 50p) to a taxi driver. Don't really use anyone else who 'traditionally' gets tipped.

i always tip my binmen. i give them a case of beer. i so appercaite all they do for us. i tell them where the case of beer is and they collect at a suitable time to them.

i used to tip my postman with a box of choccy's. but where i live now we never have the same postman for much longer than a couple weeks at a time.

i don't have a paper delivered and the paper boy in my area is my bro anyway, lol.although he does shop duties mainly now and cover. also don't have a milkman.

I don't tip my binmen because they are rude! I do tip my milkman though, I know he is only doing his job but he does it well and it makes my life easier so he gets £5.

We seem to have a different postman everyday so I wouldn't know who to tip!

I am funny about tipping, I don't get tipped in my job. These people are all doing their jobs. Posties have striked a lot recently, to get paid more, which was a big inconvenience to the public. If someone goes above and beyond their job and gives me good service then I will tip them, but generally dustbin men, postmen etc just do their job, and no more. We quite often don't get our post til gone 1, and the bins are left strewn all over the street.

I always tip both our postmans ( one delivered parcels other letters) but usually with a bottle of wine and or box choccies or biscuits. They both are friendly and are like friends to us now. They both go out there way at times to come back to re-deliver a letter or parcel if i am out or sign it for me and leave in a safe place.

The bin men i use to give them cans of beer but this year we have 3 different bins so may leave a 4 pack out for each set of bin men so 12 cans altogether. I assume there is no more then 4 men to each lorry?? Again they always take the extra rubbish we put out.

We dont have a paper boy/girl.

  • lol...binmen - are you kidding? asides from being on the dole its likely the easiest job around...given we now do more than they do, its US who should be getting a tip at Christmas :D

My postman does deliver a hell of a lot of stuff to me but isnt that keeping him in a job??

What he does do above and beyond is sign parcels for me and leave them in a safe place to save me going to collect them...that ensures he gets a pressie :p

I leave out some beer for the binmen and give the postman and paperboy £5 (each!)

    Happy moneysaving all.

Tip our binmen as they are wonderfully helpful and break their official rules to help individuals - they get £20 - there are four to a team so a fiver each. Two of the team have been our binmen for over 10 years and have waved to my now 9 yr old son every week since he was old enough to look at the wagon go past!

As we no longer have a single postman, but lots of different ones I don't know, I won't be tipping them.

Had same milkman for years so more of a friend, normally leave out homemade biscuits for him.

Window cleaner and wheelie bin cleaner both get a fiver.

When our local tip went private we found out that it was open til gone four on Christmas Eve which I think is unnecessary on Christmas Eve so we took some bottles of beer down for the lads on duty.

All those who get tipped have been really helpful when I've needed extra help this year and are happy smiley people even when it's cold, dark and rainy.
  • I tip my window cleaner,

are delivery drivers allowed to accept tips? (the ones from sainsburys etc)
