What's the likelihood that flats would be favoured over other types of dwellings?

  • Hi, I currently have a problem with my existing combi boiler which supplies hot water to downstairs sink and to rads okay but struggles to supply hot water to upstairs sinks and showers. Glow-Worm Tech Help suggested may need new pump. Bolier is quite old. I have 2 qns:

    1. Is it better to get existing boiler patched up or buy a new bolier?
    2. If a new boiler is best, which one? (4 bed terraced hse with shower in loft)

    Thanks

Good afternoon: the most cost effective measure would be a service on the boiler and a system check on the rest of the central heating. In regard to the 'best' boiler, my OH fits Vaillant, Viessmann and Remeha (all have stainless steel heat exchangers) but every RGI has his/her favourites/pet hates. Take a look at the HHIC for further advice.

Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)

Unfortunately, i think is slim. The energy efficiency of flats is higher than that of houses, due to the fact that most flats are next to, and ontop of each other- thus containing more heat.
I guess we will have to wait and see!

WARNING after paying for central heating insurance to British Gas for 14 years the one time I asked for help it was condemned.
Then I got a new boiler under the scheme for elderly disabled.
On 27.12.09 it broke down only three and half years old.
British gas were the only people available to come out.
After TWO DAYS it was still not working.
I only got the repair done, by the people who originally installed it, on 4.1.10 when the spare part shop opened. Bill? £573.82p
That meant I had eight f.f.f.f.freezing days with only a small electric fire.
A whole new boiler only costs £625.
The "motherboard" was £217.17p and the display board £162.58p
Three hours labour £194.07 and that was reasonable considering that the man was here for more than three hours and came some distance.
If you have an old boiler hang on to it and sod the environment especially if you are an old boiler like me and now very very skint.
  • Hi i have a old backboiler about 40 years old would have to take a wall out to remove it after reading the posts on the forum i think i will leave it to blow up in its own time as it still keeps the house warm:snow_laug

    Hi
We have a 21 year old Potterton Netaheat Electronic, which BG, on their service visits, keep saying is 65% and really should be updated! (It's had nearly everything changed in the last few years tho' and works fine!!)

I also would want another ordinary boiler, and keep the hot water tank.
What would you recommend? (We have 11 radiators.)
    Thanks
Hi i would really consider changing your boiler to a more efficient condensing one, apart from that all new boilers these days have to be a minimum of 85% efficient which means yours is trailing by 20%,call the guys at heatingcentral.com for better advice:)
