"Free" Windows 7 Upgrade @ PC world

Hi,

I purchased a new PC from PC world on Sunday with Vista and they advised me that I would be able to get a free upgrade to Windows 7 - I specifically asked them about this as I wanted this operating system. I asked how I would get this and they told me to go online leading me to believe that it would a dowloaded update - again I checked this. Upon returning home and logging on to the site I found out that I had to pay £21.99 shipping costs for a disc that I had to use to install. Never once did they mention to me that I would have to pay anything towards this "free" upgrade, if they had I may well ahve gone for a higher price PC with it already installed.
I have just spoken to the PC world customer support, who were actually very rude, and they gave me some talk about them not misleading customers over the postage costs etc and that they have had some complaints over this but most people accepted that it costs £21.99 to send something!!
I just wondered if anyone has managed to claim this money back form PC world - she informed that I would have to go back to the store and either get a refund or buy a more expensive machine even though she admits that I was misled.

Thanks,
Richard.

The price varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, about £7 up to £22 in your case. What brand was it?
It's not a download, they have to send you the DVD, but obviously a rip off at £22 postage.
I'm afraid that if you buy from PCW then this is what you get.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It's buried on the HP website.

Q: Is there a cost for an upgrade kit through the Windows® 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP?
A: There is no cost for the Windows® 7 Upgrade Kit from HP, however, there may be a charge to cover shipping, handling, and other fees.

I didn't say it was right. What I said was, that if you buy at PCW, you must prepare to be a dissatisfied customer...you can't expect an outfit like PCW to give you the full picture if it might get in the way of a sale.
If you wanted W7, you would have done better to buy one with it pre-installed-the PC you have brought is obviously an older stock item that has been sitting around for a while, so they'd be keen to clear it-you may well have got a discount that is worth more than the cost of the upgrade though.

It's nothing to do with PC World because they don't administer the distribution of the software. It's the computer manufacturer.

I imagine you were given a web address for HP to contact them to order the upgrade? Remember, the software is still "free". Although, it seems to cost almost as much for the P&P, which is a bit ridiculous.

£22 postage for a disc?? It'd be cheaper if you asked them to pop it in the post without any stamp etc on, and paid the surcharge & postage cost at your local delivery office!!

The main problem is that you've bought a Vista computer when the majority already have 7 pre-installed. I assume you got a very good bargain on it?

No it's 49p postage, £21.50 for the Jiffy bag.

PC World are unlikely to be able to do anything (they have nothing to do with the disc postage etc). If you are dissatisfied the only real option they have is to refund you (or manually discount a copy of 7 but they are *very* unlikely to do that).
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
  • "£22 postage for a disc??" - includes insurance as last time with Vista loads of discs went missing.
I'm going to call into the shop and see what they say - gonna use the customer service conversation as a baraganning tool. All I want is for them to give me £21.99 to cover the postage cost as they did mislead me. They were aware of that postage charge and neglected to tell me.

It's not postage, it's 'shipping handling and other fees'.
Which basically means that they can charge whatever they think they can get away with. HP are clearly one of the worst offenders at this game.
