Research also shows that drinking a pint of milk a day is worse for you than 20 cigarettes, doesn't mean everyone is going to start smoking because someone got paid to research into it, I also wonder where they get the figures from as I have never been askedOne day I might be more organised...........

Personally I am dead against it BUT I think different homes have different needs. I would suggest that Tvs are best kept out of places for sleep and places for homework or revision (they may be young, but once in I think it is hard to remove) and encouraging children to be on their own and not having to compromise with other family members is not helping them learn to live and socialise with others.
However, in some homes it is the only place and as described above can be restricted. I am a great believer in giving children treats for good behavior, perhaps it could be a special treat but as I described above could be difficult to remove!
I think all educational and emotional research would warn against it.

Some research I can believe, some, well it just leaves me laughing.
My son has Autism and ADHD, was diagnosed well before he got a TV in his bedroom. ADHD is a medical condition, not something caused by television. Like I said when this research was done I was never asked to complete any report on how many televisions we have and where.
Anyway back on topic, timers can also be a good idea for controlling time if he wishes to have a television in his room. One day I might be more organised...........

But if they're going to have one make sure it's a little 14" portable. I would not agree with a child having some gigantic widescreen thing. Actually before 10 years old I had a black and white tv.
As for all this rubbish that comes out of America and suggesting violent television breeds violent kids, they weren't normal to begin with. Need I say more?
What is the difference in the size of the TV? If they are going to have one in their room, why does the size matter?

I wonder how many people would reply to a thread " Reading to a child before bed" ? Not saying that the TV thing isn't important but I would just love to hear everyone desperate to read to and with children for pleasure.
OOooooH! I said it!!
Worms everywhere now. Get them back in that can!!

My children have a story before bed every night. Something I have done since they were babies. Oldest prefers to be read factual books now, but either way it calms him down for the night & part of our routine. One day I might be more organised...........

theres a time and place for both IMO
i love the bedtime story with my 4 yr old and just recently weve got him some story tapes / books which he loves to share before bed
my eldest is 10 now and so reads himself A LOT he has 2 massive shelves heaving under the weight of his books
hes a bookworm like i was at that age
both boys love going to the library & we are learning a few spanish words everyt day from a kids spanish book
but i know someone who has admitted shes never read to her children and thats v sad
to me its just common sense and everything in moderation really
i dont mind a bit of tv / video / dvd watching / computer game playing ,so long as they read, play ,get exercise ,do sport etc aswell
but saying that when you watch thses programmes eg honey we are killing the kids  some kids watching tv pretty much every moment they are home and no i totally agree thats not good at all !0 -
My baby is 5 months old. I have read a story to him since he was born.Bath, feed and story. He is now starting to look and respond to the pictures etc and looks when I read..
Much more interesting and cheaper than a TV in his room if I can keep it up!!

Exactly :T Well thats if the parents are sensible enough to moderate it.
My sons room is like that at 7, we have 2 book shelves and 2 massive boxes, then there is another cupboard full in the sitting room, and thats just one of my children. I think when I was working out my budget for this month and trying to see where I over spend it is mainly on books. So have started going to the charity shop more.
I'll be honest quite a bit of my sons speech came from TV, when I started letting him watch more it improved, but like I said he has ASD . Unfortunately the documentaries he enjoys are mainly American and he has picked up the accent lol.One day I might be more organised...........
