Digital SLR camera - Canon any good?

I know choosing a camera is a very individual thing but I wonder if anyone has experience of the Canon EOS 350D camera? I am looking for a modest SLR and I have read that I could use my EF lenses from my old EOS film camera with this model (albeit with a 40% telephoto effect - which I could live with).

My dad swears by canon photography equipment - he has a digital SLR not sure which model but it does take great pics.I'm better off without you.0

The EOS 350 is pretty well though of in the camera world and is a good step in to the DSLR world, Im planning on buying a new camera towards the end of the year and it is a strong possibility the 350 will be the one. I just like taking photos and I used an SLR years ago but since digital came along they have always been way over the top on price.
The 350 does have a plastic body which is one of its downsides and people feel it needs a battery grip to bulk it out a little so it feels better to use. check out http://www.dpreview.com/ for hundreds of reviews0 -
Hi
You could also look at the Canon 20D also as with the 30D just having come out it may drop in price!0 -
I have the 350 and it is an excellent camera. Nikon and Canon are the 2 main brands.
The one thing that other people have said though is that the 350 was too small in their hands. I am not the largest person in the world and it fits my hands perfectly but it is certainly worth going to Jessops and make sure it is comfortable for you.
The 30d is the next model up and does have some good extras like spot exposure and 2 scroll wheels for full manual control.
If memory serves me correctly Sony have just bought out the rights to minolta/ Pentax's lens fitting now that they have said they will be exiting the market. The existing SLRs from them have anti-shake built into the camera itself rather than canon and nikon where you have to by IV/ IS lenses if you want this functionality.
The crop factor is something worth considering though. I think it is great when using my 70-300mm lens as it give that extra zoom for nothing but it is a pain when trying to get ultra wide angle shots. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

I'm thinking of getting this Camera,

Seems to be the best high street price to include the kit lens ? £485
I'll need a Memory card as well of course but I think I can pick that up for a good price seperately (e.g. computer fair).
Jessops seems to be more expensive £509

Anyone beat these prices on the highstreet?
cheers

I'd reccomend the 350D too. I was also told it was too small to hold, but moving from a smaller camera I found no problems at all. Results have all been good (except when I've been playing) and I can't find anything bad to say about it.0

This has come up time and time again. The 350D is rated as an excellent starter D-SLR camera. Some find it a bit too small though.
IMO the two best ditigal consumer SLR companies are Nikon and Canon.
Check out Steves Digicams, DP Review and DCResource (google is your friend). There is tonnes of info there. The forums are also very good on Steves Digicams.
Oh, I have a Nikon D50."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
can't afford a digi slr atm myself (I use a minolta, great cam), but I have a few friends who have been heavily into photography for many, many years, and they all use Canon digital SLR's to a man. They're meant to be fantastic

(and who knows, maybe one day I'll be able to afford one too)"If you really want to hurt your parents and you don't have nerve enough to be homosexual, the least you can do is go into the arts."0 -
Well, OK, thanks....
Actually I'm sold on the Canon 350D...it's now just a case of where the best deal is to be had at the moment. As it's quite an expensive purchase for me I want to get the right deal.
I'm looking for the body with kit lens and I'll need a CF card as well.
