  • Here you go!

All you need is the reg, the doc ref number off of your portion of V5 and your credit/debit card!

    Happy driving!

Hi again....have been to that page earlier and the first question is
' I am the registered keeper of the vehicle. I have the V5C Registration Certificate (Log Book) and the address on it is correct. Please note, this service cannot change your address. '

as I said in an earlier post I only bought the car this eve so as yet i'm not registered with the dvla

I do wish people would read the OP thread...it seems quite simple, she has to sit back and relax, maybe polish the car and wait until the insurance documents arrive or the new V5 arrives.

You have insured it? You cannot insure a car unless it is yours. If you have, nothing to stop you applying for the tax then - make sure seller sends off the V5!

You cannot tax a car online, or by telephone, using a 1-28 days short term insurance policy but you can do it at a GPO provided that the insurer is prepared to let you have an original insurance certificate. A few providers of short-term insurance, in particular Norwich Union, refuse point blank to do this but some insurers are perfectly happy to comply. It sometimes happens however that someone takes downloaded documents to the GPO, and the person behind the counter refuses to accept them. Legally you have to provide evidence that the vehicle will be insured in your name on the day that the new tax disc comes into force; and it really shouldn't make any difference whatsoever even if that insurance expires the morning after! The problem can come with the documents themselves; regulations stipulate that original documents only, and not copies or downloaded documents can be accepted. Some post office or DVLA staff consider anything that has been printed on your own home printer to be a copy only and therefore highly suspect, on the very reasonable grounds that it is fairly easy for the information on the forms to be altered. This can create a problem because some online short term car insurers only provide online documentation, and they do not send out original documents by post because of cost considerations. However you can ask this company for an ORIGINAL certificate which costs an additional £2.50 (or £6.50 if you request special delivery)

Hi, I am with egroup insurance, I thought that was the going procedure these days anyway

Jeannieblue- sounds loads easier but I have already paid insurance without sending V5 as its not signed by last keeper. so as the V5 is not in my name yet will I be unable to buy tax.?
I would've thought so - but ideally get it signed and sent.

We need Flutterby on here really - as she is dvla experienced - try sending her a pm.

  • You CANNOT do it online as you are not the registered keeper.

Print off your insurance certificate on quality paper, take to Post Office with part of V5C and money. Hopefully Post Office will not notice that you have printed off insurance cert yourself and they will tax it for you.

Officially you are not allowed to used insurance certs that you have printed yourself to tax but many PO's let you or just don't notice.

If it doesn't work then you will need to keep it off road til insurance cert comes through post.

I had egroup insurance and the document they posted to me was exactly the same as the copy they let you print online, so just print it off. They don't even send it on good paper lol.

edit- oops it wasn't the OP who mentioned egroup :o
