    Thanks,

I do wish BG would make it easier to to see prices on their website; however the tariff is on energyhelpline

For the average user(20500/3300kWh) in my area(Midlands) it is £65 cheaper than Websaver 4.

It is still not the cheapest - but closer. First Utility is £902, OVO is £919 and BG websaver5 is £930.

For myself as a heavy user First Utility is a lot cheaper.
British Gas British Gas are the largest provider of gas and electricity in the UK with around 11 million gas customers and 6 million electricity customers. They are generally known as Scottish Gas in Scotland and Nwy Prydain in Wales.

Service Ratings - they have been given a 4 star service rating by us as they recently had a low number of cases raised against them by Consumer Focus. They also have an extended hours call centre and excellent services to pay bills and submit meter reads online.

Tariffs - British Gas offer a number of different types of tariff, including a standard tariff, online tariff and capped tariff. Their cheapest online tariff is WebSaver 4 which includes both lump sum discounts and discounted rates. Any customer switching to a British Gas online tariff should be aware that they will no longer receive a paper bill. The WebSaver tariff is however specially designed so that customers can do as much as possible over the internet. If you did need to call BG on this tariff, there is a customer service centre now available on a 0800 phone number.

Green Tariffs - British Gas offer 2 green products. Zero Carbon is a tariff that offsets all of a household's energy usage to be carbon neutral. Future Energy is a 100% green electricity tariff.

HOMECARE - British Gas also offer standalone boiler and central heating service plans. This is often known as British Gas Homecare Cover. This contract is entirely separate from your gas and electricity supply and is not dependent on you being a British Gas customer for energy. If you choose to switch away from British Gas for your energy, the service will continue and be completely unaffected.

It will be interesting to see if BG allow you to switch to this tariff from another BG Tariff without a penalty(if the tariff incurrs an exit penalty)

I rang on behalf of someone who was on the fixed to 2011 tariff(oh dear) and the call centre operator told me unequivocally that they would waive the exit penalty for switching to websaver 4.

However when the person tried, she was told it was not possible.

Does any BG employee know if staff have discretion on this matter?
  • The exit penalty does apply this annoyed me when I tried to go from
    WS3 --> WS4

£60 Penalty would apply or Fix 2011 it would be £100

As far as we made out only managers May have this discretion.

I am on BG Price Guarantee until end of month, and they told me, i would have to pay my penalty to move to WS5 before then...

Does anyone " in the know" expect utility prices to fall again this year, making "fixed price contracts" a money losing scheme, as some were this year.

Well of course nobody knows, but all the indications are there might be a modest fall early next year.

However if you do go on WS5 you are only tied in until June 30 2010 - so less than 7 months.

In any case the penalty for moving at £30 per fuel, so if there was a much cheaper tariff came along you have to 'bite the bullet' and move if you will save more than £60 before June 30.

I think if you re read my question, I wasnt asking "if anyone KNEW"....but was simply asking the opinion of anyone who knew more than me about utility prices..., and your bit re "indications" has answered my question...........thanks...

I think my penalty is £50...

  • What a great bit of business by BG - keep bringing out new versions of its Websaver tariff at embarrassingly regular intervals (err, why not just REDUCE the prices on the existing Websaver??) - then charge their loyal punters to move from one of its older versions to this super new version. A scandal, TBH. BG are the epitome of what's wrong with the energy industry at the moment...

I'm on websaver 2, which has a cancellation date of 31st December 2009. I've mailed them to ask is I can swap without paying the fee.

In my opinion there will be a small decrease in gas next year and possible an even smaller elec decrease but the overall trend from now on will be a gradual rise. I expect next year to be the year of long term fixed products which should provide value for money if they are not to much higher than online.
