Are People putting things on hold?

I have just been reading one of the other threads and got the impression that people are putting a hold on things whilst waiting for the General Election. Is that true or have I misread things?

We are sitting tight but as you may know our work situation is not great. We are living for the moment and have no plans for holidays, cars etc. Is everyone else in the same boat?

    Sensible idea.
Which mean that 99% of the population wont be doing it.

Why worry, when the government will bail you out?

Yes, and I think they have been for some time. This government has not been consistant, in fairness some was due to circumstances outside control, but the internal wranglings alone (remember, they almost said Brown should go themselves a while back) have been unsettling. Then this storm in a tea pot (just as it settles a bit we pour more) over the expenses..with pretty near record standing down/being pushed (and still jumping or being pushed) and the credit cruch.

IMO America's election timing was hugely advantageous when compared to ours, the good spirit - whether well placed or not- lifted people's ability to endure because of both hope and a period of political stabilty, and confidence seems such a very huge part of the equation.

On a local basis, I know some are frustrated and holiding back as we currently have no MP. Well, we do have an MP, but he's not actually doing any work, merely holding on (and being paid I may add) until his 60k payment as he has stood down.

So locally we sit in a kind of limbo with no real voice until after the election when we will get a proper situation sorted again.

Meanwhile, we put our hands in our pockets to pay this man who has decided he no longer want's to work for us.

    Brilliant.

I can only answer for myself obviously.

We've decided not to change both cars this year. There is nothing wrong with the older car, it will suffice.

We also had probably too many financial eggs in the same basket. Not a good situation, which needed to be rectified.

    Yes we are.

If the Conservatives get in we are going to go to Italy next year, if Labour get back in it will be France, and if the LibDems win we are going to holiday on Venus.

Depends what you mean by putting things on hold, as far as housing goes, younger sis and her boyfriend, probably quite typical of people their generation (late 20s good office jobs), in London have decided they will never be able to buy anywhere so there is no point saving. They just spend what they earn and if they get into trouble housing benefit will pay their rent.

Another couple we know, IT consultant and a teacher, small baby – have decided they will never be able to afford to buy anywhere so there is no point trying, though they are being more sensible about saving.

I have a string of 30 something single friends who are living in shared houses, would like to buy somewhere and settle down but just don’t see it ever happening. All mid salary white collar workers.

I don’t know if people are holding off or have just got tired of the goal posts being constantly moved to favour homeowners and people in debt.

If every time you try and get ahead the government comes along and slaps you down by adding a few more percent onto house prices and taking a few more percent off your savings, and then knocking 30% off the currency you hold it in – you start to feel like you’re not even considered a participant in the UK plc, so theres no point trying to be.

I’m probably going to buy somewhere in the new year but I’m currently in a better position than most people my age.
