Another couple we know, IT consultant and a teacher, small baby – have decided they will never be able to afford to buy anywhere so there is no point trying, though they are being more sensible about saving.
.
Couple two seem sensible. If they really can't afford to buy, why beat yourself up about it, but it doesn't mean you can't save for retirement or other pleasures in life besides housing.0 -

Only the true Mr Broderick would deny knowledge of Mr Broderick.0 -

Well I dont think they're at peace with it. They think - not unreasonably, having two professional jobs that required post grad study to get and both earning decent wages that they should be able to buy - but they just cant.
It doesnt make a vast deal of sense as I would have thought that if you are running a country - that its people like that who you want to encourage and nurture. But obviously Gordon is more concerned about the plight of 55 year old buy to let investors, the long term unemployed, and people on 125% interest only mortgages.
Britain is a funny place.
Edit - oh I had two other friends - one a teacher the other a nurse, they just emigrated to New Zealand because they they were tired of scratching a living here and being on the bottom of the respect heap.0 -

To give Gordon his due, today he talked about shifting a lot of civil service jobs out of the capital to cheaper areas, in an effort to save money.ruggedtoast wrote: »Well I dont think they're at peace with it. That may release more housing for your couple friends...if they are in the SE.0 -

Yes I'm aware of that policy - it made my wife and I redundant a few years ago. Now the department they moved is probably going to have to move back to London because no one wanted to follow it to the grim industrial northern town it went to.
And few people in the local area were qualified to do the work. I am glad it happened in hindsight as it we both ended up with much better paid jobs, although the cost to the taxpayer was enormous if you incorporate all the restructure costs, never mind the department being crippled overnight.0 -
Why would anyone put anything on on hold because of a forthcoming general election?
I can only imagine it will be business as usual when the conservatives get in power.... they can't do much more than Labour are currently doing....0
