Jam in a slow cooker?

Hi everyone,

I've just been shopping this evening and brought 30 large punnets of strawberries at 9p a punnet...so a brilliant bargain :j

So its jam making for me in the morning :D

I was wondering if anyone has made jam in the slow cooker?
If you have, did it turn out ok and what receipe did you use?..how long?..temp? etc.
It would make it a little easier for me if its possible as I'm going to be overrun with strawberries in the kitchen tomorrow.
Any tips really appreciated.

Many thanks

Firstly, does *your* bread machine have a jam setting? If it doesn't, then I wouldn't advise anyone to make it in the BM. Hot jam spilling over onto the elements inside a BM doesn't bear thinking about.

Secondly, if it has a jam setting on your BM, did you get a recipe for jam in your BM instruction/recipe book? If so, do use that one!!! The measurements/instructions will be designed for your type of machine so if you've never made it before, you really should adhere to that to begin with.

    hi Sally,

This sounds like a brilliant idea, any chance you could post your recipe for the jam?? We've just inherited a slow cooker, & so far have only used it for chilli & lamb shanks, but I'm intrigued by your jam making....how did it turn out?? and where did you manage to get your strawberries so cheap?!!

    Many thanks,

:embarasse uuuummmm Queenie after the important taste tests at certain crucial ;) stages of the jam making there was enough for 2 pots lol...no I managed to make 14 jars of jam :j

Furrychimp....Heres the receipe if you'd like to try it out (just multiply according to your needs)

4 pints of strawberries (I just threw them in a pint mug as I havent come across this measurement before..and no nabbing a couple once weighed ;)

2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice

1 (2 ounce) box of pectin...(I actually used the sugar with pectin in as I couldnt find any pectin on its own found in Tescos)

3-4 cups of sugar (depending on taste)

    6 hours 30 mins prep
In a large mixing bowl, coarsely crush the berries by hand using a potato masher, leaving a few whole berries or chunks.
Transfer to a slow cooker; add in the lemon juice and sprinkle with the pectin; let stand for 10 minutes.
Stir in the sugar; cover and cook on LOW for 2 1/2 hours, stirring twice during cooking.
Remove the lid, turn the temperature to HIGH, and cook for 2 to 3 hours longer, until the jam reaches the desired consistency.
Ladle the warm jam into clean spring-top glass jars (or use screw tops with new lids); let stand until cool.
    OR
Store, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 2 months; or spoon into small plastic storage containers and freeze for up to 3 months.

I was really lucky and walked in at tesco when they were putting them down and filled my trolley..hardly believing my luck.
They had trays and trays of strawberries at 9p a punnet...I would of gone back if I'd had enough jam jars to put it all in. At that price I knew that I couldnt go wrong. :D

Now I need to find lots of jars so I dont miss out on any more bargains!

Good luck if you try the receipe out.

The biggest problem I have is finding Jam Jars WITH lids!

My kids are capable of cleaning the jars when they wash up, but chuck the lids away (ARGH!).

MIL keeps putting hers in the recycle bin - regardless of my pleading. My Mum doesn't use jars at all.

Think I will put a request on Freecycle!

If you visit you local Country Market you will probably find they will have a supply of new plain jam jar lids of the most common sizes.
I find asking neighbours is a good way of getting jars/lids.
I've never had to resort to paying for them but others might want to use
