Tesco Online Out of Warranty Form / Partial Refund

Options
Hi,

I have a laptop on which the screen cracked after approximately 15 months of use. The crack wasn't caused by any misuse as it wasn't dropped, hit, banged, etc.. I spoke to Tesco customer service to see what they were prepared to do (as it was out of warranty) and was sent an out of warranty form.

After filling the form in and sending back, I have had a letter from them today. The letter says that they are sending me a cheque for £200 for the intrinsic value of the laptop (was £399 in August last year).

I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this process with Tesco. The letter makes no mention of returning the laptop to them; I could use the £200 to buy a replacement screen and fit it. I don't want to order a replacement screen and then find out they want the laptop back though! If they do, I think £200 is a bit low, even given my 15 months use.

Any experiences / advice much appreciated - I'm particularly interested to find out whether they might later ask for the laptop to be returned.

Thanks,

David

£200 for a laptop that was £399 over 15 mths ago sounds pretty reasonable to me. You could go back to them and say that your not willing to accept that as final settlement to see if they will increase the offer but I'd doubt they will. Personally I'd take the £200 and put it toward a new laptop rather than replace the screen.

Absolutely fair, you can't expect a full refund when you've used it for 15 months I'm afraid. They don't really even need to do that without an independant engineers report as it's over 6 months old, I think they are being extremely generous
  • I don't think the OP is saying he/she isn't happy with the offer but wants to know if he/she will need to send it back to Tesco.
If I was in your shoes I would call them and ask them if the money is for a replacement screen or do you need to send it back. Most people would have not even thought to call Tesco as it was out of warranty so even if you have to send it back you still got a good deal there.

Sell the broken laptop and put the £200 towards buying a new one. I don't think Tesco will want the laptop.
  • Thanks for all the replies.

For Keeps is right, I'm not unhappy with the offer per se - I certainly wasn't expecting such an easy process! Assuming I can keep the laptop then £200 is very generous indeed (I know I can get a screen for around £70-£100 and fit it myself).

The laptop was a good buy, so if I need to buy a new laptop it'll probably cost me at least as much as £399 to get something else with a similar spec and a 12" screen as per the original laptop (Acer 2920). Bearing this in mind I would be a little disappointed if they were to ask for the laptop back and offer the £200 (although I do recognise that it's not a bad offer on paper).

Thanks again for the comments - I think I'll give Tesco a ring and confirm whether they will want it returned.
  • Rang tesco - not open today it seems! Want it sorted though so may order a screen today working on the assumption they don't want the laptop back.

Patience. Why go to the bother of ordering a new screen until you know for sure what's happening. I'm sure you can wait 24hrs.

I'm surprised there doing anything to tell the truth, once it's over 12 months they don't have to give you anything.

Nice to know you can still complain after that tho as personally I would have just got it fixxed with out thinking :T
