You were lucky to get any sort of offer. Normally a cracked/broken screen will be classed as misuse/mishandling unless you can prove conclusively it wasn't.

I agree; I was quite shocked that it was such a simple process to get this far. When I initially phoned their electrical helpline I was told that they treat all cracked screens as accidental damage. Although I didn't mention the sale of goods act, I emphasised that I could reasonably expect the laptop to last for longer (both on the phone and then on the out of warranty form they supplied). I was very surprised when I opened the offer letter as I was expecting it to ask for an engineers report at the very least!
In this case the laptop really has been treated with kid gloves and so I have no doubt that I am legally entitled to get something back. I imagine the screen cracked due to it flexing when opening / closing.0 -
Hi
I had exactly the same issue with a tv I bought, where after 13 months it died and Tesco offered me back what I had originally paid minus £40.00. The letter stated that I did not need to return the tv to them.0 -
Quick update - spoke to tesco and they do not want the laptop back. I've ordered a screen (£70 including the bezel, webcam, inverter etc. - bargain!) from ebay and assuming all goes well with fitting that, I am a happy bunny! Thanks for all your help and advice.0
