Building new PC, Mobo/Processor?

Well , yes to the e6300 ,but I'm not sure about the faster mem.
A higher fsb is like it's factory overclocked already and you need a better m/b to improve on this.
Intel are getting much better at "binning" or rating their cpu's. All wolfdale cores are pretty much the same but Intel aren't going to give you a e8600 (£200) for £55 (e6300) -I know they reduce L2 cache but they also test the cpu and the worse performers are rated lower. They are getting very good at this and some cpu's are exactly what it says on the box and not a lot more, whereas older e5200 might go much higher.

I just bought e3200 -£29- and got it to 3.7 on g31-s2l m/b!! It was flakey at that speed pi 1m - 17 sec tho'. But I have a better cpu I don't want to lose. I could get an e8600 or even an i7 setup but I don't think I can justify the spend.
I only o/clock last year or so and I'm 1958 vintage!
It is your call , and google is your friend.
The companies like intel and microsoft have to sell product -multi cores are the future, but I dont think we need that many that soon.0 -

Thanks both of you for the input, the help is much appreciated.
My workmates all have computers but not a clue how they work so help her is invaluable.
Decision time then,
1.E6300
2.4GB 1066 MHz RAM
3.Asus P5KPL
:T
Will order in the next couple of days unless anyone comes up with a better plan.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Looks like a good list, enjoy. The memory is going to be the expensive bit but you need some at least.
I feel young now, I am of Star Wars age, 77.
Win EuroMillions and buy us all top of the range rigs, just for Bragging rights, that's my money saving tip.

I should have been clearer,I was referring to cpu fsb not memory speed. I have the idea that faster memory (ddr2) is just memory which tests out well, so yes it is lower design which works out well , however ,say ddr3 mem is designed to be faster and it is rated as better spec. and it is, so you are correct there.
When you raise the fsb on a m/b it also affects the memory, many m/b do not have very good memory speed dividers so the memory can end up trying to run faster than it can, I am el cheapo and only use ddr2 so this is something I bear in mind.
Maybe check out the m/b's on this thread as they will all work with e6300. http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/390358-e5200-overclocking-thread.html
It is way past my bedtime, you're right, goodnight.0 -
I've ordered an Asus P5KPL-AM and new hard drive from ebuyer this evening.
I'm holding off regarding the processor because the memory has jumped up in price, so may yet settle for the E5300 and slower memory.
I can afford to hang on for a couple of days to see if prices come down again.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Just to update,
I kept an eye on memory prices.
Then one evening saw some OCZ Blade series at £51 for 2x2GB, stock numbers were dropping fast so went for it and also an E6300. Hope it's O.K.:o
The above combo actually came out cheaper than an E5300 and 2x2GB 800Mhz memory.
I got around to having a trial install this weekend, also, I wanted to compare 32bit with 64bit, all worked perfectly out of the box.
I left the BIOS with all default settings for the minute, which means the memory runs at 800Mhz, the board will do the 1066Mhz but you have to apply it manually, I think I've got that bit right.
I didn't bother to install the mobo drivers from the supplied disk, this was just a tryout, Win7 found everything, running with 256Mb onboard graphics and all the Aero goodies,
Super Pi results were,
32bit 19.3secs and 64bit was 19.2secs.
Performance scores were
32bit 6.2 6.2 3.8 3.4 5.9
64bit 6.3 6.3 3.9 3.4 5.9.
Obviously the onboard graphics are the let down, but plenty good enough for me.
All in all, I'm pretty pleased, it's well over spec for what I need, but heyho, I don't usually spend on myself, but I've finished the mortgage, and worked hard, and only had one week off all year.
Total cost was £167, already had a case and decent (ish) 500w PSU, also had £15 cashback cheque for changing energy supplier, which I'd forgotten about! :TMove along, nothing to see.0 -
Thanks for the update. Exxxx cpu's are v.good ,most folk don't realise, and should be usable for the foreseeable future.0

No problem, it's the least I can do, I should be able to have a bit more of a play in the next few days.
I think it's helpful to give a bit of feedback, how often do you see threads and wonder, did they finally get it sorted?
Just to add, I didn't pick up on it, that board is the AM version, meaning it only has 2xsata and 1 pci connection.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
See this thread post 15 -http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2158801
There seems to be no tech info on the ebuyer site!!! -I assume you got from them.
One pci and 2 sata isn't very good. If you buy a different m/b from them they should be more accommodating.0
