Building new PC, Mobo/Processor?

I have just been given the following abandoned project by a workmate whose wife insists new baby and house move take priority.
NZXT Apollo case (yuk).
Jeantech JNP 350P PSU.
Asrock 775i65G motherboard.
Pentium D 2.8MHz (?) processor.
1GB DDR 400MHz memory.
It was apparently bought as a bundle by someone who fired it up without realising the PSU was still set to 120v.
He gave it to my workmate who fitted the current PSU, but still nothing works, except the CPU fan spins for a second.
So I guess the motherboard is fried.
Unless anyone has other thoughts.
I don't need a very high spec and definitely not into games.
So decision time.
1.NZXT case
2.I have either the above PSU or a spare similar to THIS one, please comment if either not good enough.
3.I was going to use E5200 processor, but it seems to have been superseded by the E5300
4.To go with the above processor Ebuyer suggest THIS Gigabyte motherboard.
Budget is roughly £100 for processor + mobo, if either of the 2 PSUs above are not up to it add £40.
I've used ebuyer as a guide but will shop around nearer the time.
Hard drive and memory should be easy to sort.
So a total of £200ish tops.
I will use it to dual boot Linux Mint and Windows 7, probably 64bit after reading a thread on here the other day.

Try resetting cmos - take battery out of m/board for a few mins.
Can you try another psu?
I nearly threw out a m/b last week after psu failed but it turned out to be a bios setting prob.
That m/bo is ok and will even o/clock. I have e5200 sitting at 3.5ghz 24/7 ! Last week I got an e3200 to play with - it went upto 3.7ghz but was a bit flakey - only £30 at pricelover.com.
You will need some ddr2 mem. for a new board.
A 775 board will be easy to come across used - £10~150 -
You'll have to believe me but just before coming back to check for replies, I tried another PSU and cleared the BIOS, and after about 30 seconds it stumbled into life.
Then find your post.
Good call.
Now running Puppy from a flash drive.
'New' Jeantech PSU is obviously faulty, I've not come across the make before today and will avoid in the future, nasty Made in China thing.
I'm now thinking, E5300 processor and another 1GB RAM, mobo will only take 2x1GB ddr400 according to Crucial.
Then see how it goes and possibly upgrade mobo using faster/more RAM and keeping same processor.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Jeantec cases are ok on a budget but the PSUs are terrible.
I have a 5300 with an Asus P5KPL-AM MB at the moments after upping from a E6320 processor, it makes all the difference. The 'D' processor will be a very limiting factor before the memory tbh.
I am bored with it though and will be going AMD next, I fancy a Phenom II and DDR3 memory for a while. Pity you couldn't wait a couple of months my Mobo and processor will be on ebay in feb lolNew PV club member. 3.99kW system. Hi ,please check if m/bo supports e5300 -45nm wolfdale
http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=775i65G%20R2.0 - this is rev.2 m/b the rev.1 is far more limited.
My be worth considering e6600 - http://www.cex.co.uk/products/computing/processors/processors%20-%20intel/index.php?page=3&mode=buy -or even ebay, that is if you have the rev.2 m/b
That g31-es2l m/b is ok I have earlier version in one system.
cex have e5200 for £35 del. and 12 mth warranty.0 -
Well spotted again!
Just checked and under the G of 775i65G it says rev.2.03, so should be O.K.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Hi , I don't see any E-series cpu's in support list for rev.2 -these are the newer 45nm wolfdale core cpu's. Maybe if they bring out a new bios? e1200 celeron etc. are 65nm conroe cores.0
-
Thanks again, the mobo has Presler and Conroe printed on it.
So spot on again.
Also potential problems with having to update BIOS.
I'm more used to getting old stuff up and working for family and friends, and thought this would be a doddle.
So what about a revised plan?
Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2l + E5300.
Sell Asrock mobo, processor and RAM on ebay.
So won't have to bother upgrading for a while.
Your input and help is much appreciated.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Decisions ,decisions! The pent D cpu's are regarded by some as top speed cpu's -you may be able to sell a full tower on ebay with a bit (loads nd loads) of hype!
However things have moved on , conroe and especially wolfdale have become budget upwards cpu's. I don't look at i7, yet!!!
https://www.pricelover.com/subcat/189/Cases-&-Power-Supplies/Midi-Tower-Cases/# - cases from £5.50
https://www.pricelover.com/subcat/41/Hard-Drives-&-Controllers/SATA-Hard-Drives/?p=3&rp=10 - 500gb h/d £31
You could maybe build a good sounding system and flog that, or try the m/board/cpu/memory bundle on ebay - personally I like the sound of shiny new case pc. -http://www.ebuyer.com/search?sort=pricelow&store=2&cat=23&limit=10&page=1 --delivered!!0 -
It might be worth thinking board and ram first. Something with DDR3 compatibility but will still take the 775 'D'
I say this as the E5 series only has an 800mhz FSB which is a bit limiting. The E6 series is 1066mhz FSB
Or be brave get a Phenom II x2 core black edition. Then pray it unlocks to triple or quad core and then clock the mutts off it
Intel is switching away from 775 processors so in the long run you may limit yourself but is cheap now.
AMD AM3 socket is cheap and as DDR3 is very similar in price to DDR2 RAM then a DDR3 compatible board is the way to go certainly how I see it.New PV club member. 3.99kW system. Solar Edge with 14 x 285W JA Solar panels. 55° West from south and 35° pitch.0
