  • thanks oneday77..
i recently got a kind of sort of present of a 'man tv' (42" sony hd blabla) , so the blu ray idea is starting to sell itself to me. and thanks, i didnt know there was a 'slimline' version .
i have resisted both up to now u see, wii was our thing for last 2 years, but i darent even walk past it at the moment, becuase my 'fitness coach' has turned into sgt major and shakes her head sarcastically now when i log in (infrequently) to do my workout and says stuff like "oh dear, it HAS been a while hasnt it, oh well we'll try to do something with you", then i 'm almost sure i can hear her sniggering while she does the splits and suggests we warm up...

maybe little big planet would be kinder to me...

ouch!!!. look what i started. crikey and i thought girls were !!!!!y!.

i was leaning towards the ps3 have to say. the blu ray bit would be for mum!
the wi fi thing was just of mild interest, but they probably wont use it, or not much at any rate,
but thank you for all of your input, i'm lookin back over it all and will try to make an informed decision and not just eeeenie meeeeenie miney mo...

Might be worthwhile taking your kids to Game (or anywhere with a decent selection of video games). Then you can see whether the Xbox 360 or PS3 section grabs their attention.

Just make sure you get either a slimline PS3 rather than the older thick model or an X-box with a Hard Drive. Without a hard drive you will need one of the game save cards, so extra expense.

The Xbox 360 Arcade has 256 MB of internal storage, which is more than enough for storing saved games.

My daughter has one wrapped up under the Christmas tree. Last night she was messing with her presents, and she pulled the Xbox out and I said "will you leave that x-", then she gasped and did a little dance saying "I know what I'm getting!".

I'm considering getting a box of the same size and putting something realy rubbish inside, and then hiding the Xbox somewhere.

    I'm evil like that.

    DO IT!!!! :rotfl:

then wait for the disappointed look on her face :)

back on topic, it would be the PS3 i'd recommend for the media playback and gaming side of things (all in one). Littlebigplanet is a good game, and eyepet looks good but i haven't tried it.

One thing....whatever you do make sure the console is connected to the internet, because if not, they'll be missing a LOT.

Little big planet's whole reason for existence is creating levels and then downloading other user created levels.

Some games have FATAL flaws in them that need patching, or to improve them (see graphics patch for Ghostbusters on PS3, patches to fix game-breaking bugs in fallout 3/fable 2/pretty much any other game). Some games have free extra content that enhances the experience. Not connecting the console to the internet is getting half the experience at best, and this is coming from somebody who hates and never plays the games online.

not to mention playing demos (which can be downloaded) will save a lot on buying duff games.

Not that I disagree with the general thrust of your post, but I just wanted to point out that her kids are 8 and 10 years old.
  • true enough but thats a good point if there are updates and patches available, then it's important to be connected. i have wifi, so that shouldnt be difficult. they have it on the wii, and like you say they never connect to other people online but they do get updates for the wii and other stuff comes up..

    all good. cheers.

(smiley face). didnt work last time!! :O)
  • I wouldnt recommend either......my sons xbox went back 4 times!,.....had his ps3 less than 2 years and already had it relaced once,..its just gone wrong again and sony want £128 to fix. I think the newer consoles are so complicated thats why they break so easy....give me a ps2 anytime.....oops sorry didnt mean to be so negative.

    The Wii is very reliable.

    I think I'd rather have a broken Xbox 360 or PS3 than a working Wii though. ;)

thanks for all the advice guys. sorry about your xbox dying jarlawuk.. bummer.
when u say online subscription. does it have wifi? the ps3. i know with the xbox u have to pay etra for the connector to allow it to be wifi, up to 100euro extra? (i'm in ireland)

yes the ps3 has wifi built in but if you had an xbox you dont have to buy the wifi as it depends on the location of the 360 in terms of the router as you could just use an ethernet cable to connect the 2, what was meant by online subscription was that to be able to do multiplayer gamimg eg say you bought an xbox for son number 1 and wants to play against 1 of his mates who also has an xbox you would have to buy a subscription which is around £30 but with the ps3 there is no subscription as its free for multiplayer gaming
