Yes the PS3 has wifi built-in with no online subscription.........….

Yet many would argue that Xbox Live is a superior service.

    It's certainly worth £2 a month.

Not really. It's a lot faster than the wifi on the PS3. It's a vast improvement for both gaming and streaming media.

cheers bribrian. built in wifi is a huge plus in my book.
better get my credit card out....
thanks again. always get instant and valuable advice on here from you all.

An Xbox Arcade with a wireless adapter still works about £50 cheaper than a PS3.

Ask yourself if the kids are really going to watch Blu-rays or store media on a PS3.

I was going to disagree, but then I looked it up:
    Main Entry: fan·boy
    Pronunciation: \ˈfan-ˌbȯi\
    Function: noun
    Date: 1919
    1. a boy who is an enthusiastic devotee (as of comics or movies)
    2. a person who disagrees with bribrian

So I apologise. You are, of course, correct in all things, oh sage one.

    I agree.

Speaking as an owner of both ps3 and xbox:

Pros: Lead development platform for most games, games are cheaper on average, Xbox live arcade has more demos, content and a MUCH MUCH MUCH better layout than Playstation store. Easily the best joypad since the gamecube.

Cons: noisy, gets hot and isn't terribly reliable (but mine has NEVER RRODd and it's a launch model :O)

PS3: Versatile home entertainment system with blu ray playback and good upscaling. Quiet. Finally has some nice exclusives.

Cons: Suffers some terrible ports (I dont know who could say ps3 has the best graphics when only a tiny amount of games take advantage of its power), the Playstation store is horrible. (To make it useable I ended up getting an american account...at least that has a demos tab). Games tend to be pricier.
  • ouch!!!. look what i started. crikey and i thought girls were !!!!!y!.

i was leaning towards the ps3 have to say. the blu ray bit would be for mum!
the wi fi thing was just of mild interest, but they probably wont use it, or not much at any rate,
but thank you for all of your input, i'm lookin back over it all and will try to make an informed decision and not just eeeenie meeeeenie miney mo...

Don't worry about the WiFi for your needs either would do.
Just do what every 'Dad' used to do for their sons. Buy the trainset(LittleBigPlanet) they wanted and let the kids play too every so often ;)
Just make sure you get either a slimline PS3 rather than the older thick model or an X-box with a Hard Drive. Without a hard drive you will need one of the game save cards, so extra expense.
Games wise they tend to get the majority of release on each. There are exceptions of course. LittleBigPlanet\GranTurismo PS3 & Halo\ProjectGothamRacing 360, there are others so no need for anyone to pipe in ;)
360 games will run cheaper especially in the trade in shops like Game\Gamestation or the Irish equivalents.
One advantage with the PS3 that wasn't mentioned all the bits are built in(nothing to snap off(wifi)) and I will be proved here wrong wireless controller is standard but not on some models of 360.
