During traffic shaping, the speed wouldn't be that low.

Well my download speed goes from normal and expected 1.2/1.3Mbps down to 300kish and if you look at the terms for traffic shaping it states 75% throttled! which at 1.9Mbps, as the poster had, would mean a reduced speed down to 475k ish when thorttled which amazingly is between the posters range of 4-500k stated.

Also its for next 5 hours which means your evening if you use it up during daytime then the next day its back to normal - does this sound like whats happening to you rotate?

If so use a program like DU Meter to see how much your using during the day can even highlight potential security issued with your line (If usage is high but you havent been using it much)

Pretty obvious why its happening if you work it out and hence the reason im leaving them.

OP, are you still on the 2MBps cap, or has your service been upgraded to the new 'base' 10Mbps service? Since you are getting 1.9Mbps at best, I'm thinking no.
I thought Virgin had now completed the upgrade nationally?

    Hungover so bear with me.....

    Have you?

    Got a chipped/cubed STB?
Checked all your F connectors are tight ?
Is your cable in good condition?not kinked or trodden on.
Replaced/extended the cable with shop bought stuff?
How many cable boxes do you have?
Are any unuesd connections terminated with a 75Ohm cap? (looks like a nipple)

Chipped cable boxes put noise onto the network which 'eats' bandwidth.
    Loose connections allow signal ingress/egress.
Damaged cabling can 'refract' signal strength.
Shop bought cable is unsuitable for cable instalations, even CT100 is no use.
The more boxes = more signal required,if the installer did'nt check & ajust your tap & port in the cab to a higher strength then that can cause your problems, same if he did'nt attenuate or equalise the forward/return path.

    Right,off back to bed....
