Virgin download speed

Please can someone help to clarify what download speed I should expect to get on my Virgin Media cable broadband connection.
I am on a "large" package.I have a ethernet connection straight off the new modem.
During the day we get around 1.9 Mbps, however during the evening when we want to use the internet it drops to around 4-500 Kbps and sometimes as low as 350Kbps.
On talking(frequently)to tech support I am told this is the normal speed and is what I should expect.
Somehow I think they are bullsh*ting me,what are other peoples experience.
Thanks

I think i've been pretty lucky with Virgin. Get the occasional drop but that's usually when the weather is really bad. Some idiots have got into the box to switch on their own cable in the street, which means everytime it rains the cables get wet n mucky.

Are you using wireless or wired connections to download? Always find it seems to go better when using a cable direct into the modem/router

When you log in to your modem via browser, what are the upstream and downstream power levels?

Posting a speed test which used a cached file is order to try and brag is not offering much help.

I have never spoke to you before in my life. Lots of other people told you that it was using a cached file in another thread though.

So - are you going to offer and help some advice, or just going to brag about something which you haven't got?

Think i may have worked it out for you - do you by any chance go over the allocated 3Gig limit before throttling kicks in ? I think it reduces speed by 75% check out thier website for the limits. Other than that try the old reboot of both router/pc and modem.

also note any streaming like Iplayer can use a fair chunk of that allowance.

    Hope it helps ;)

During traffic shaping, the speed wouldn't be that low.
