Boy are you lucky if your kids don't do this. Our eldest was dreadful and can still be. However we worked out that it happened a lot when he was tired and it was just an easy way of getting you to continue the conversation - the answer was irrelevant as long as you keep talking to him. We had two tactics - we either reflected it back and asked him a question - the thought required for that often meant he lapsed into silence while he thought and then didn't restart. The other one when I was getting fed up with it was simply to say "zed". Initially he didn't understand the joke (he does now because he knows his alphabet) but he soon got the message that if Daddy said "zed" it means the "Y" game is over!Adventure before Dementia!0

please don't stop children asking why. i can't remember the exact stats but within something like 6 weeks of children starting full time school they ask approximately 80% less questions than they did before. we need children to feel confident in asking questions so that they can get the answers they needs in order to understand the world. when a child asks why, answer them!0

Sneezeyboots I agree entirely but within reason!
The string of whys some kids come out with are purely tactical, I know I used to do it to delay bedtime! That and super slow walking up the stairs!
Occasionally a "because I say so" or "because that's the way it is" or "because I'm a grown up" is needed to put an end to it when it gets silly. I wouldn't dodge a serious question from a child! In fact I found myself trying to explain why judges wear wigs to a 7 year old the other day! Most bloomin judges don't actually know why!!!0 -
I remember my kids doing this, I thought all kids did it and it was just their curiosity about everything! I know it did drive me mad and sometimes resorted to telling them no more 'Whys' for a while and told them it drove me batty!0

lol - my son (NO1) used to do this - endlessly!! our answer once we got fed up was 'The wye is in wales'.............referring to the river wye! or - just for a change 'why not?'0

They will grow out of the 'Why why why' in a few years and it will be replaced with .................'but why........ but why...........but why and 'I need this' or 'I need that'Nature wants the human race to survive. However, it does not depend on us because we are not its only invention.0

My method, used with other people's children, is to answer 'why'. In detail. at length.
Bore them out of it!
Seriously, answer them. I've found it always works and as long as you give an adult answer they will get bored because it is TMI for them to follow so they stop. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

DS is 3 and he does this all the time, very annoying. I usually say "that's why", mainly because he asks "why" to stuff that's not really easy to answer. But DD who is 6 never did this. You tell her to do something and she just does it, always has. But DS has to be obstinate. You never get two the same .
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
Mum used to tell me - because wh(y) isn't a z!0
