Halifax Current A/C decision?

Here I go again about applications for a bank account! Well, hubby got declined for the HSBC Plus account. So I said try the Halifax, it's mainly for convenience as he uses Co op's Smile and isn't keen on their online banking. Also the branch is miles away if there are any problems.

So earlier he applied for the reward account, this is the message he got after the application:

'Your account has been opened'
Then it gave the sort code 11 ** **
Then an 8 digit account number.

It then asked him to register for online banking which he did, lots of questions!

So would you say it is opened? He didn't want an overdraft.
Is their online application instant like this?

When I opened my reward account I got the same message and was instantly shown on my online banking, so I'd say he has the account.

Looks to be ...... 11: etc is the Halifax sort code range. Don't forget he will need to pay in £100 to get it off the ground, debit card issued etc.

Their online banking is very good - with the exception of Faster Payments which is a forum in it's own right.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • The Halifax system automatically generates a sort code and account number on application. It is by no means guaranteed, but saying 'your account is opened' indicates that it may well be approved.

Thanks for replies,it'd be strange to say 'your account has now been opened' if it wasn't? Plus having him register for online banking.
So you have to deposit £100, how is this done?
Does that come before the debit card, then they issue that later?

Oh, apart from the sort code and a/c number, there is a roll number too?

    Sorry about all the questions:rolleyes:

yes, you will need to pay in £100 before they will issue the card. now you have an account number and sort code you can pay in the £100 at a branch, by post, or by on-line banking from your present account.

All Halifax accounts also have a Roll Number, it's a legacy from their building society past. You don't need to use it.

Not sure on the Websavers, used to be some needed you to have a basic websaver before you could open the more special ones. The basic websaver is a very poor rate of interest though. Which one did he want to open?

Halifax systems work uniquely to all others in that each and every application will be generated an old 'roll number' which in turn generated and linked to an account number. So, assuming your hubby was totally new to HBOS, upon completing his application, it would generate an account number etc - but will not show a roll number just yet. However, when he logs in/out and add's an account (using the details given earlier when he opened the account) he will then see for certain if it has been opened. If so, the account number etc will be a link which will allow him to access the account, if it has not been successful it will say something like 'application decision'....

It is by no means guaranteed just because it generated an account number. Best give it a day or two then ring or wait for postie - if it was successful then they will write confirming that he needs to pay in £100 to release the card etc....

Not trying to put a damper on things, but just thought i'd let you know how HBOS works cos it can be rather misguided...

Thanks NID agree it is a misguided system, confused me. I checked my credit file to see if they've done an 'associate' check on me; and they have:o So not sure now, although I've not done too bad getting credit.
He got turned down with HSBC, but that was cos almost 6 years ago this coming January 2010, he defaulted on a credit card with them.
It was however paid off in full. But must still be on their internal system? They did no check on him on any of the CRA's, will that info come off their own systems like it does with say Experian?
