Edited to add, I'm now 40 so this was a few yrs ago. To the OP if you can cope then please try to, as the rewards in terms of relationship with your grandchildren will be worth it

That's all verey well, but if grandparents are struggling financially it's the children that suffer through having to go without and not having what they are fully entitled to.

Yes I agree, and my grandparents did suffer financially esp as grandad died when I only 11, we did go without many things. Some parents would rather enjoy their money than make sure their children have what they need. And if the OP can get help then they should, with child benefit being the first. Am unsure what else is available.

really trying to stay OP - you're doing a wonderful job xxxxxx

In the OP's case there does appear to be money that should be made available to them, unfortunatly the daughter, in the OP's words, would rather spend it on herself.

Given the length of time this has been going on I would think it would be worth getting some decent legal advice. Look for a solicitor who's a member of the children panel and ask if they do a free initial consultation. After 7 years it may well be that you have a strong case for a residency order which would automatically make it possible for you to claim the CB/CTC etc. If 12+ then children get a huge say in where they want to live.

NB I'm not saying you should take the legal route, but knowing exactly where you stand legally might help clarify things for you and add some weight to your negotiations with your daughter.

  • thanks for all your replies, you've all given me alot to think about.
  • evermore - something I don't think we've asked, do you believe your daughter can actually AFFORD to pay you a bit more (but choosing not to)? Have you dared to just ask her if she can pay a little more each week as you are finding money tight? It could be that simple!

On the topic of proper/legal advice, I wonder if your local CAB might be able to offer some guidance. Don't want your daughter to feel as if you're wheeling in the 'big guns' and start being difficult (particularly your access to the youngest one who doesn't actually live with you).
