MSE News: Flyglobespan collapse - how it affects you

  • If you have paid for anything to do with FlyGlobespan flight or holidays using a Credit card or Visa Debit card, you should be able to claim your money back.

If you booked your flight directly with FlyGlobespan and you did NOT use a credit card or Visa debit card, then you will be out of luck in any claims.

If you booked via a Travel Agent, you should be covbered by ATOL and get your money back.

If you booked a PACKAGE holiday with Globespan, you will be covered by ATOL and should get your money back.

It seems lots of agents were booking flight only direct on the airline's own website and inputting customers card details, thus creating a direct booking with no ATOL protection. Even if the agent debited your card, providing the ticket was issued within 24 hours of booking and with eticketing they almost all were, there is no ATOL protection. Only package holidays are likely to be covered by the CAA ATOL system, anything else and you are at the mercy of the credit card issuer, and if you used a non credit card, good luck
  • I booked a package holiday through Redsea holidays to Egypt to fly on the 8th January 2010. I have heard that those travelling yesterday were put on different flights out to egypt (i think they moved them to Monarch). Does this mean that I will be given an alternative flight? Has anybody been in the same situation?
  • can anyone help. i booked a holiday for the family with on the beech, i paid by switch maestro. my flights was with globespan. ihave phoned on the beech, and all they say is for me to email them,. i did that and they havent replied. i know they arent atol protected. will i get my money back, or have i lost my money.
  • Hi
I paid for my holiday with a maestro card (bad mistake) and was wondering whether I could make a claim to my bank using the chargeback rules and template for the visa debit cards?
  • check which bit of 'globespan' you booked with 'flyglobespan' the airways arm or globespan - it might make a difference re protection. like you booked with maestro - trying to find out if can apply to bank for reiumbursement under chargeback - see credit card protection bit of the site for info - this is a protection scheme for visa debit cards and I believe maestro are mastercard debit cards
  • To anybody who has paid by switch and the bank is not allowing cash back claims they only other route is trying to claim back via the adminstrators. The address is on the website. The bank is more than likely the best bet, this is just a option if they are saying no. Good luck everybody.

No, as far as I'm aware Visa Chargeback only applies to Visa debit cards and not Maestro.

However if it is a package holiday you booked and not just flights, you may be able to claim against the CAA under the ATOL scheme. The link to details is on https://www.flyglobespan.com
  • My parents were stuck in Cyprus and when they tried to speak to the Travel Agent (ABTA bonded) on the phone from Cyprus, they did not get a reply. The hotel managed to obtain return (indirect) flights home for the 2 of them, at a total cost of almost £1,000.
The holiday was paid using a credit card.
    Is there any comeback anywhere?

I fear not. If your parents booked a package arrangements should have been made for them by the CAA. If they chose to make their own arrangements they will probably have to pay for them themselves. However, no harm in trying with the travel agent, the CAA, travel insurance and, if they booked the original holiday by credit card, with the bank.
