I don't see Any utility company saying "no we will not install these meters as they will not save anyone a significant amount of money and are unlikely to reduce consumption." The alternative uses for these meters discussed through this thread are the likely reasons for their agreement and if they do not cost the utility companies anything then thats a bonus for them. The utility companies have nothing to lose and perhaps a lot to gain. No fight from them then.

The government may well be concerned but just not concerned enough to do anything really useful or cost-effective about it.

Come on....you don't Need a £340 meter to tell you if you are using too much energy. Frankly, the lack of cash in your pocket after paying the bills should be all some people should need.

Really, just how far is Joe Public supposed to bend over backwards on this ? Its too easy for the politicians to dictate to us when they can easily afford their own bills or claim them back as expenses.

This meter issue is about control - of what remains to be seen but it has already been shown Not to be about controlling energy consumption. How long before our smart meters are used to enforce blackouts - in the name of conservation of course ? Hmmm....

At least we all knew where we stood,people answered the phones,you got your meter reads 4 times a year,you got bills,you got special offers and free offers i.e free safety checks,free or reduced rate servicing of appliances for pensioners in winter,a subsidised reapir service etc etc etc and non of this faffing about with CORGI this and GSR that...

I think as a start to benchmarking the validity of the smart metering process,it would be useful to look at what they do in other countries,particularly the eurozone. Does anyone have any knowledge/experience to share??

I am "in the trade" so to speak.

I work for a company that specialises in installing smart meters into commercial buildings. The definition of "smart" in this context is slightly different as it means the meters are multifunction and communicate with central servers, BMS's etc.

To save confusion I believe the meters I am involved with are being renamed as "advanced" meters.

As for rollouts elsewhere, 30 million smart meters have recently been installed in homes in Italy.

"legal metrology" refers to the certification of a meter for billing purposes. There are various standards that have to be met such as accuracy and the ability to seal the meter, along with its' settings to make it tamper proof.

The legal metrology legislation for electric and gas meters used to be governed by OFGEM but this now comes under the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) and is governed by the National Weights and Measures Laboratory - the same people who make sure weighing equipment in supermarkets etc are accurate.

MID is an EU directive to standardise meters accross Europe, so yes you are right MID is European legislation.

And these so-called "smart meters" (aka piece of s!!! meters in my book) will be about as tamper-proof as a biscuit tin because the energy companies will go for the cheap as carp ones, charge the government (i.e. us taxpayers) the full whack if there are any subsidies involved, and then sit back and let them fail.

I think it's time to start thinking about withdrawing the implied right of access to my property for these smart meter installers, especially as it won't be an emergency works situation (which is a different kettle of fish).

I would refuse any wirless instrument in my house till proven safe once said frquency found .... hacked.
Would only take an EMF to block the signal the real reason so plod can raid your house if you suddenly have a high bill and see if you are growing drugs or copying DVD's or Blue ray Disks in their thousands.

As to remote cutoff when energy is short they will use it to cut you off if you are using too much.

Also they have to change your meters every twenty five years in any case.

Who needs a smart meter when efergy do a unit that is easy to set up and tells you what you have used and the costs?
