There was nothing wrong with Vista if you had a good enough machine. The problem was the minimum spec that Microsoft quoted really wasn't up to the job.

I certainly preferred it to XP. Windows 7 is a big improvement over Vista though.

Unless you've got a really good reason to run XP, i.e. a ciritical app that won't run under Vista or Windows 7 I think you'd be mad to run XP.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Kwikbreaks - thanks but the toshiba link does not work. As it was a prize there is no mention of windows 7, i think item was bought in October before so it might have missed the Windows 7 launch on new laptops.
Sorry not sure what happened to that link. Try...

As you mentioned though it may be too old to qualify and may required receipts etc.

I've checked it myself and it starts out asking for the serial...

That link may not work for you either though - I think the site stores cookies which is why my initial link didn't work for you. Rubbish web design imo.

Donnie - Yeah i will suggest Visa first.
Luckily the prizegiver has included 1GB ram with the laptop..so when that is fitted will make it 2GB total.

That's good that it came with the extra RAM.

If you do upgrade, it will be to Windows 7 Professional.

It's like Home Premium, but with:

    Windows Server Domain support.
    Remote Desktop Server support.
    Location aware printing.
    Encrypting the file system
    Presentation mode

For those interested in such things, look here.

You just need to refresh the page by choosing F5.

It's not too old to qualify, as it is a current model. There is no need for a receipt, only the serial number of the machine.

Thanks for the info!! I would never found that Toshiba upgrade link myself!

Not booted new laptop up yet, will do later today as kids have tried to take it over.
Sounds like its worth paying the extra £28 for Windows 7.
If i do order Win7, is laptop still okay to use with Vista in the interim, as would need to wait for Win7 Cd to be posted.

Also i have fitted desktop memory before, is laptop memory easy to do?

^Yes. Just ensure you have anti -virus and -malware protection installed.

^Yes, a case of unscrewing two screws at base of laptop. Make sure you get the appropriate specified memory modules.

It probably arrives with a 30 day trial of McAfee, so that will tide them over.

In addition, a lot of unnecessary software is installed initially. You should uninstall them to prevent them from slowing down your system.

    This may help.

i may prob not even bother with any free trial AV, and just uninstall the lot and download MSE.

PC Decrapifier looks interesting, is it reputable software that can be used? just never hear of or seen it mentioned on this forum.

Haven't used it myself, but seen it recommended a few times and haven't heard any negative feedback.
