If it's going to a dealer, yeah, take it off and see if they moan.

But in general if you are making a private sale the amount of tax left on a vehicle is usually taken into account in the selling price and most people would assume that the tax disc is included.

when i bought my last car 4/5 months ago the garage told me they werent allowed to cash the tax discs in anymore - the post office had stopped them doing it, so told me to take it (and reminded me to)!

I thought I saw something in the local dvla office about not being able to claim car tax back after January

Take the disc. it's likely that the garage will cash the disc in themselves before the car goes to auction if you don't take it.

Us dealerts cant cash them in these days. We ask our customer to leave them on the px car and if we sell the car before the month end, we will send them a cheque for the VED amount. If we don't sell the car then we post the disc off the DVLA for them to get a refund direct.

What happens if you dealers send a car to auction these days?
  • I took mine out when I px my saab,
Can't think of anything funny to put here!
  • Only the registered keeper can surrender a tax disc to the dealer would have to register it in his name and add another owner to the car is he wanted to cash in the disc. I changed both our cars under the scrappage scheme this year and was asked for the tax disc in both cases even though the dealer cannot become the registered owner of a car taken in for scrappage and so would not have been able to cash the disc in. In both cases I refused to part with it and cashed the discs in.
