paypal problem - seller complaint £400!!!

Hi people

last time i had a problem i got good advice so here i am again.

I sold a laptop for £400 to italy on ebay, payment recived via paypal + good feedback recived.

Now the buyer has launched a complaint through paypal saying not as described and claims its broken but he is lying or has broken it himself as he confirmed it was up and running few days after he got it (but i have no proof of this as it was through msn chat that he told me)

The £400 is now on hold so i have a negative amount in paypal as the money was taken out of paypal after i recived it

the buyer has no feedback on ebay whereas i have over 500 and have an ok rating with paypal

currently the options i have are:
give full refund £400
partial refund £250
or fight the claim

From my experience paypal fall on the buyers side, can people advise me, do i just loose £250 better than risking losing £400??

thank you in advance for your experience/help
i need replies asap

Surely PayPal will ask the buyer to return the item to you first of all.

the buyer claims that it has blown up when he plugged it in for charging and that the screen has been damaged or smashed so i dont want it back because he has damaged it.

Did he leave you feedback after recieving the laptop?

I doubt very much the laptop is damaged at all, and I'd insist on him returning it to you.

at least the money is in YOUR bank account

paypal could go either way on this one,, though of late, they are getting better, they'll probaly look at the history and 'possibly' side with you

do the pics in the auction clearly show the laptop working OK?, if so, you're lucky, and thats more ammo, especially if the screen is in GWO,

did you note the serial number of the laptop?, is it possible the guy is trying to do a 'swapsie' on you?

I wouldn't give a refund without the buyer returning the item first. How are you to know it's actually damaged? If you refund without receiving the item back then you could be losing £400 and a fully functioning laptop.

Did you package the item well? How did you post the laptop? Did you take out insurance? Perhaps it could have been damaged in the post.

Glad it's been resolved to your satisfaction. Not sure I understand why the buyer is content to be £300 out of pocket on a laptop which has allegedly blown up and had its screen damaged or smashed; I have to say I think you've been conned unfortunately.

Oh I do know - I stopped using Ebay and Paypal completely after a fraudulent chargeback. Glad you're not out of pocket.
